I-70 Tunnel Traffic Down in August, Labor Day Weekend

The colorado Dept. of Transportation has posted responses to public comments about the Northwest Corridor Environmental Impact Statement on its Wen sire as plans move forward for a freeway loop on the west side of the metro area.

(11/01/2005)

In August, 993,762 vehicles passed through the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels on I-70 - 53,883 fewer vehicles than in 2004 and the lowest August traffic count since 1995.

It also marked the first time since 1996 that fewer than one million vehicles passed through the tunnels during August. As of Aug. 31, the tunnels still remained 95,254 vehicles ahead of 2004 on a year-to-date basis.

The 2005 Labor Day weekend four-day count of 153,605 vehicles indicated a decrease of 7,415 vehicles from the same weekend in 2004 - the lowest Labor Day weekend four-day count since 1996.

CDOT attributed the decline in tunnel traffic to the closures caused by the rockslide west of Idaho Springs in early August and to higher gas prices.

Vasquez Boulevard Traffic Realigned for Bridge

CDOT realigned traffic on southbound Vasquez earlier this fall for the next phase of a bridge replacement in Adams County.

The realignment moved southbound traffic to the east, requiring southbound traffic to merge with southbound Colorado Boulevard traffic. The shift will remain in place through the end of December. Since the new alignment will reduce the number of through-lanes, a pull-out area is available for emergencies and accidents. Hamon Constructors Inc. is the contractor for the $6.3 million project, scheduled for completion by July 2006.

New Wastewater Treatment Authority Formed

The governing bodies of the city of Brighton, South Adams County Water and Sanitation District and the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District voted in September to form the Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Authority.

The new joint regional wastewater treatment authority will serve northern Adams County and Brighton with a new wastewater treatment plant near Brighton.

The RWTPA is expected to serve an area generally north of 104th Avenue extending to Brighton in the South Platte drainage basin. Current plans call for the new treatment facility to begin operation in 2010, with the capacity to treat 18 million gal. of wastewater a day. The site for the new plant has not yet been determined.

CDOT Posts Northwest Corridor EIS Responses

The Colorado Dept. of Transportation has posted responses to public comments about the Northwest Corridor Environmental Impact Statement on its Web site as plans move forward for a freeway loop on the west side of the metro area.

The Colorado Dept. of Transportation has responded to public comments and questions collected during the Northwest Corridor EIS public meetings held in May and June and posted them to the project Web site at www.NWCorridorEIS.com.

CDOT is studying transportation improvements in an area extending from the freeways near U.S. 36 and the Northwest Parkway in Broomfield County to the freeways near S.H. 58, I-70 and C-470 in Jefferson County. The Northwest Corridor EIS was initiated in Dec. 2003.
