The topping-out ceremony for the new 91,000-sq-ft patient tower at Montrose Memorial was held recently.

The tower was built by Colorado Springs general contractor GE Johnson Construction Co., which completed a different expansion project five years ago for the hospital. Recent growth created the need for more even space, hospital officials said.

The new addition - a design-build project with H+L Architecture - will include more patient beds, as well as a new medical/surgical patient-care area with private rooms, a new emergency room, intensive care unit, cardiac catheterization lab, front entry and food service operation.

The project has also been designed with a rooftop helipad with direct access to the emergency room and a fourth-floor shell to accommodate future expansion.

A number of hospital staff, officials and county and project leaders attended the topping-out ceremony. They included Miguel Seda of H+L Architecture; Dave Ivis and Fred Wolfe, GE Johnson; Ken Platou, chief executive officer, Montrose Memorial Hospital; and Greg Majors, chairman of the Montrose Memorial Hospital board of trustees.

Ceremony participants signed the final piece of steel that was placed on the structure and hospital volunteer chaplain Michael Lundberg blessed the facility. GE Johnson Project Manager Shawn Slater spoke at the event, as well as Platou and Majors.
