Siemens Honored for Thompson Schools Work

The company was recognized for achieving a 10-plus-rating point increase in energy efficiency as measured by the U.S. EPA’s Energy Star benchmarking tool.

Through an energy-savings performance contract, Siemens delivered a comprehensive series of energy efficiency-related facility improvements to Winona Elementary and Turner Middle Schools in Loveland.

Energy savings from the performance contract were verified using the International Performance Measurement & Verification Protocol and monitored by Portfolio Manager, an Energy Star benchmarking tool.

According to the EPA, through the use of Portfolio Manager, the Thompson School District receives energy tracking and benchmarking information that helps heighten the staff’s energy awareness and improve operational strategies.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the results,” said Thompson School District Energy Manager Rob Stafford. “Not only do the savings in energy translate to extremely satisfying bottom-line results, but they contribute directly to the comfort and productivity of our students and teachers. Everyone benefits—from the taxpayers, to our staff, to the students—and with EPA recognition thrown in, it’s definitely all good.”

When the school district embarked on the project in 2003, Siemens began benchmarking all 35 of the district’s buildings using Portfolio Manager to access the EPA’s Energy Performance Rating System.

According to data gathered by the EPA tool, over the three-year term of the contract, energy and water savings totaled 7,724,630-kw hours of electricity, 334,032 cu ft of natural gas and 79,966 kGal. of water. These savings translate into $557,000 in avoided electricity costs, $267,117 in natural gas costs and $200,746 in treated water costs.

According to Thompson School District, total savings, including operational savings accumulated over the three-year contract, was more than $1.3 million.

“On top of the energy savings, recognition from Energy Star has highlighted the positive benefits achieved by Thompson School District to both the staff and the community,” said Marty Skolnick, account executive for Siemens Building Technologies. “So far, three schools in the district have earned the Energy Star label and two others received letters of recognition for excellent improvement.”
