The American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado
awarded $26,500 in student scholarships this year to promote
the study of engineering. Since 2000 the council has given
more than $155,000 in student engineering scholarships.
This year's recipients are John Avery, Matthew Eberly and
Ravi Singaraju, Colorado State University; Brad Bettag and
Phillip Wolfram, Colorado School of Mines; Alex Ennor, University
of Colorado at Boulder; and James Foreman, CU-Denver.
Rebecca Travers, a home-schooled student, and Gavin Griffith,
of Rifle High School, each received a $500 scholarship for
their bridge design entries in the annual high school bridge
building contest, co-sponsored by the Professional Engineers
of Colorado and Bureau of Reclamation.
ACEC/CO also awarded $1,000 to the Colorado Mathematics Engineering
Science Achievement program, which helps K-12 students who
are under represented in mathematics, engineering and science
professions develop the skills needed to stay on track for
college through enrichment coursework and activities.
"As an industry we are aware that we must be aggressively
involved in growing the next generation of engineering professionals,"
said ACEC/CO Executive Director Marilen Reimer. "The
scholarship program is one of the ways that we are able to
nurture the engineering talent and expertise that will be
needed in the future."
ACEC/CO scholarship funding is provided by council members,
the American Public Works Association and private sources,
including the Leonard Rice Engineers Inc. and Malcolm &
Charles Meurer Memorial Scholarship funds. Money is also raised
through ACEC/CO's annual member/guest golf tournament, slated
this year for Aug. 23 at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Club in Castle
Rock.
Applications for 2007/2008 scholarships are due by Oct. 12.
