The $9.8-million school—scheduled to open in August—was designed by H+L Architecture in partnership with Colorado Springs School District 11 and M.E. Group. Nunn Construction is the general contractor.
The Energy Star program calls upon building owners to improve the efficiency of their facilities by 10% or more. The EPA estimates that if each building owner met this goal, by 2015 Americans would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 15 million vehicles while saving about $10 billion.
McAuliffe Elementary features geothermal heating and cooling, heat pumps with localized controls, high-performance glazing with daylight and vision windows, spray foam insulation in wall cavities to reduce air infiltration, building configuration to maximize natural daylighting; roof monitors and solotubes for daylighting; and stepped light fixture controls with room-occupancy sensors.
Compared to an average building EPA rating of 50, it’s estimated the school will see an energy savings of 2,150,425 kBtu and CO2 savings of 253,300 lbs.
