Heath Construction of Fort Collins was recently selected to build the third phase of Colorado State University’s Bioenvironmental Research Building and an addition to Hewlett-Packard Co.’s central energy plant in Fort Collins.
The BRB project is not the first high-technology research facility that Heath has constructed for the university. Other projects include the $7.7-million original Bioenvironmental Research Building, previous additions to BRB, and the $20-million Regional Biocontainment Laboratory a joint venture with Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Greeley, scheduled for completion before the end of 2007.
BRB, Phase III
The $6.75-million, 21,700-sq-ft, three-story addition to the BRB is scheduled for completion in late 2008 and will house research programs on infectious diseases and an array of mechanical and technical systems.
After the bid was awarded, Heath’s estimating team worked closely with the university’s facilities-management team, architects, design consultants and subcontractors to recommended ways to reduce costs while maintaining all quality and environmental features, said Randy DeMario, president of Heath. The review and analysis will save CSU more than $600,000, DeMario said.
The first floor of the BRB will feature laboratories with animal-holding facilities, areas dedicated to insect management and other research-related space. The building will also include a 6,000-sq-ft basement and 7,855-sq-ft attic packed with fire-protection systems, building controls, electrical systems, telecommunications distribution, building security systems and mechanical equipment essential for controlling air filtration and the voluminous air exchange required for safe facility operation.
DeMario credited Heath Chief Estimator Chris Claflin and Senior Estimator Steve Ferguson for heading the team of preconstruction professionals that brought the project in under budget.
The team included Steve Keiss, project manager for Colorado State; The FWA Group Architects; Cator, Rama & Associates, consulting mechanical/electrical engineers; Wray Plumbing and Heating Co.; and Gregory Electric Inc.
Heath completed the original BRB in 2000, then followed with the media-preparation area and BRB Discovery Suite in 2006.
HP Energy Center
Heath was selected to construct a $1.6-million, 2,200-sq-ft addition to the central energy plant on the Hewlett-Packard campus in Fort Collins. Construction includes installation of two 800-ton chillers, two 800-ton cooling towers, chill and condenser water pumps and associated piping, controls and electrical requirements.
