School Construction Bond Requests Down

Sixteen school districts will ask voters to approve nearly $200 million in school construction bonds in today’s election, down from more than a billion dollars last year and $274 million in 2005, the Colorado Association of School Executives announced last week.

Requests range from the Mapleton School District in Adams County, asking for $70 million, to the Haxtun School District on the eastern plains, seeking just over $1 million. No large-district proposals are on the ballot this year. The funds are needed for new schools and additions as well as maintenance of existing facilities and other capital needs.

In addition to construction requests, 14 school districts are seeking voter support of $21.8 million in mill levy overrides to fund full-day kindergarten, transportation, technology and other academic needs. The value of early childhood education and the need to improve technology infrastructure are fueling requests for increased operating funds.

CASE Executive Director John Hefty said it’s not unusual for construction bond requests to fluctuate widely from year to year.

“Many districts choose to go to the ballot in presidential election years when voter turnout is higher. Nevertheless, districts continue to have pressing needs for construction and increased operating funds,” he said. “This year we’re seeing more districts ask their communities to support full-day kindergarten.”
