Kennecott Land, a leading builder of enduring, sustainable communities, announced Nolte Associates as a winner of its Second Annual Sustainability Awards. The awards recognize builders and contractors for outstanding achievement in practicing and following sustainable building practices. The winners were selected from 10 builders and 19 contractors working for Kennecott Land.

The awards were established to promote and foster sustainable practices for builders and contractors working on the Daybreak Community located on 4,126 acres in South Jordan City, Utah, where 20,000 homes are planned. Applicants are judged on their implementation and participation in sustainable practices, and employee and public sustainability education on- and offsite. Recipients were honored at events held in November.

Sustainability meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations, and it is based on three pillars: environment, social and economic, Kennecott officials said.

“It is a pleasure to work with companies dedicated to sustainable practices like Rainey Homes, Nolte Associates and ValleyCrest,” said Don Whyte, president, Kennecott Land Co. “These companies have shown that sustainability is at the core of their operations, and they have proven to be true leaders in implementing the vision at Daybreak.”

Nolte Associates was recognized as one of the 2007 sustainable contractors for the second straight year, exhibiting excellence in integrating sustainable practices at corporate offices by recycling and using recycled building materials, educating and encouraging sustainable practices through quarterly sustainability meetings, participating in a U.S. Green Building Council LEED study group, using LEED building practices, utilizing construction methods that increase the sustainability of projects, controlling pollution through hybrid vehicles and trash disposal, and integrating an in-house sustainable design award to recognize sustainable solutions in project design and encourage sustainability in design.

“Our mission is to deliver sustainable solutions for civil infrastructure. This is our purpose and focus in the services we provide and the clients we serve,” said Ken Rudolph, senior vice president with Nolte Associates.

Twenty-five Nolte Associates have LEED accreditation, and the firm continues to mentor its employees to evolve its leadership in the sustainable design of civil infrastructure.
