Lakewood's Pinkard Construction Co., working with the Boulder Valley School District and Denver's klipp, broke ground this month on the $9.4-million Boulder High School renovation and additions project.
Designed by klipp, the project will add a 1,900-student, 22,300-sq-ft gymnasium, with weight and locker rooms, a lobby and ticketing area, plus new spaces for stagecraft and special education. The work will increase the school’s size to 260,429 sq ft.
The phased, occupied-facility project also includes a partial interior gut and renovation of the 75-year-old main building, ADA upgrades, a new fieldhouse and an administration addition. The occupied-facility issues include renovating the gym under a tight, summer-only timetable in time for fall sports.
The design team is working with the city of Boulder to accommodate modifications to the existing flood conveyance zone, an important consideration since the school is located the city’s “high-hazard” floodway demarcation.
The need for renovation and expansion at Boulder High was identified in the Boulder Valley School District’s 2006 Bond Improvement Program.
This is the second major improvement project klipp has designed for Boulder High. The first—finished in 1992—encompassed major site modifications, renovations and a building addition designed to reflect the original character, scale and materials of the 1937 building located on the north side. The south side was designed to create a sympathetic link between the early 1900s and the 21st Century.
