New Town Builders of Denver recently broke ground on the Challenge House in Stapleton as part of a partnership between New Town Builders, Forest City Stapleton and the Challenge Foundation.
The Challenge House will be built below normal costs using donated materials and labor, and sold at full market value. All of the profits will be donated to the Challenge Foundation.
The Challenge Foundation is a Colorado nonprofit that provides low-income youth the chance to maximize their educational experience by providing scholarships to local college preparatory schools, case management and tutoring. The organization helps Denver’s inner-city youth work towards acceptance into college and grow into active, contributing adults in the community, according to officials at the foundation. During its history, the Challenge Foundation has helped more than 200 Denver-area students. There are currently 60 students enrolled in the program.
“The Challenge Foundation’s next class of students in the program will greatly benefit from this donation,” said Don McFall, founder of The Challenge Foundation. “This is a difficult time for companies in the real estate industry, so we are amazed at the generosity of New Town Builders, Forest City Stapleton, and the many other volunteers and donors that helped build this home.”
For this project, Forest City donated the land and New Town Builders will contribute the profits from the sale of the home. With these gifts, paired with a fundraising drive from Stapleton residents, the Challenge Foundation hopes to raise $420,000, enough to sponsor six students in the Challenge Foundation program through their seven years of preparatory middle school and high school.
Part of the New Town Builders’ Town Square Collection, the Challenge House will be a LEED-silver certified home and a Smarthouse featuring real-time usage monitoring for electrical, water and natural gas energy; remote control of thermostats; Web-based control of the security system; and whole-house audio and video systems.
“At Stapleton, we work with our home builders to promote sustainability and healthy living while also giving back to the community,” said Denise Gammon, senior vice president of development for Forest City Enterprises. “When New Town Builders approached us with this opportunity, we were eager to participate, and we look forward to seeing how this donation benefits students in the Challenge Foundation program.”
