The New Children’s Hospital Mechanical Systems

The New Children’s Hospital, the headquarters for The Children’s network of care, is built on 48 acres at the Fitzsimons campus. Components of the approximately 1.44 million-sq-ft, 10-story project include 270 inpatient beds, a 49-bed emergency room, diagnostic and surgery facilities, outpatient clinics, a 250,000-sq-ft office building, data center, 23 patient and staff elevators, and both surface and garage parking.
The New Children’s Hospital Mechanical Systems

The mechanical work installed on the fifth floor was one of the largest projects ever undertaken by Trautman & Shreve, consisting of 160,000 sq ft with a 30-ft floor space and 18 custom-built AHUs stacked two high. Each handler is 50 ft long by 25 ft wide, with a total of 1.3 million CFMs. These units were shipped to the jobsite in sections on more than 96 tractor trailers, then assembled within the hospital structure for placement all within a two-month timeframe. The mechanical schedule was 31 months, six months of which was dedicated to the commissioning process.

The New Children’s Hospital Mechanical Systems

Trautman & Shreve installed more than 1,150 sinks and lavatories, 214 bathtubs and showers and 434 water closets, plus all medical gas outlets for the 10 Natal Intensive Care Unit pinwheels for at-risk infants. Each of these pinwheels handles three cribs.

Before the start of building construction, Trautman & Shreve completed all underground utilities, consisting of steam and chilled water systems that support the mechanical system for the entire Children’s Hospital campus. The internal piping system consisted of 10 different support shafts for the intricate mechanical distribution.

    Tebo Family Medical Pavilion

The new 42,000-sq-ft Tebo Family Medical Pavilion in Boulder will offer cancer patients traditional treatment options as well as comprehensive holistic therapies.

This innovative facility for US Oncology consolidates previously fragmented treatment services into a fully integrated outpatient cancer center treating patients through surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, integrative therapies and education. Services include yoga classes, massage therapy, acupuncture, tai chi and art therapy.

    Tebo Family Medical Pavilion

Situated on the Boulder Community Foothills Hospital Campus, the architecture draws upon regional forms to create a unique and warm environment, both inside and out, for a better patient and staff experience. Similar in color to the adjacent hospital, the brick and stone against exposed structural steel provide the frame for large expanses of glass looking out to the Indian Peaks. Custom-designed copper sheathing on the exterior is also utilized on the interior signage and donor recognition signage. A therapeutic garden and fountain allow patients to relax outside before treatment. A second garden is available for staff as well.

    Tebo Family Medical Pavilion

A spacious two-story lobby with open staircase and refreshment bar invites visitors inside, where the material selection enhances the non-institutional feel of the building. Wood slat ceilings, a large fireplace detailed in slate and copper, and ample daylight creates a comfortable space that helps to ease the anxiety and stress associated with cancer treatment for patients and their families.

Custom wood and glass privacy screens are carried throughout the public spaces and radiation oncology treatment area. The infusion areas have western views to the Flatirons and plenty of daylight, and all of the original art in the building is by Boulder County artists.
