Gold Hard Hat Award

Outstanding Masonry Project

  • Fire Station No. 8
    Submitted by White Construction Group
  • Located at 3737 Airport Rd. in Colorado Springs, just east of the old fire station, the project consists of a new 12,595-sq-ft building with three apparatus bays, individual sleeping quarters, a large kitchen, dayroom, dispatch center, weight room and community room. Large window groupings in the apparatus bays, community room, entry tower, kitchen and fitness rooms define the active hubs of the station.

This building replaces the current Fire Station No. 8 built in 1966 and is one of the busiest fire stations in Colorado. The all-brick exterior utilizes contrasting colors of brick influenced from a historical context of older fire stations. The scope of masonry work consisted of 85 working days and 140,000 units, including eight-in. blocks and12-in. blocks and bricks.

Brick corbelling and projecting brick pilasters provide character and strengthen the exterior detailing around the entire facility. Approximately 70 precast traditional Maltese stones with the fire station emblem enhance the windows and sawtooth-patterned archways on four separate building elevations, including the tower.

The intricacy of the masonry design—specifically on the tower portion of the building, which included both structural and decorative masonry—was a challenging aspect of the job and required highly skilled masons. The crew of 14 included several journeymen with a minimum of 15 years experience who are among the most highly skilled masons in the state.

The project had an aggressive, six-month construction schedule, and despite the extensive details, the fire station was completed on time and within budget.
