Awards - December 2004

AIA Colorado West Chapter Design Awards

The West Chapter of the American Institute of Architects of Colorado held its 2004 design awards on October 23 at The Inn at Aspen. The guest jury chair was Dennis Wedlick, AIA, principal of Dennis Wedlick Architects in New York City.

Honor Awards

McCarthy Residence
Architect: CCY Architects
Owner: Roger Clark & Constance McCarthy
Engineer: Dean N. Bosworth, PE
General Contractor: Eric Dickerson

The owners wanted their new home on a high Colorado plateau to be sculptural in form, low maintenance and highly private. The two wedge-shaped building elements and extended site walls form a landscaped entry court and open dog court organized around the locations of three Douglas fir trees on the site.

Jury Comments: "This breaks new ground in its compact plan and use of simple materials - it gets away from the 'local vernacular' of stone and heavy timber." "This is a very skillful handling of program and form."

Missouri Heights Residence
Architect: Graybeal Architects LLC
Owner: Doug & Peggy Graybeal
Engineers: White Horse Consultants Ltd., David Nelson (lighting design), Resource Engineering Group Inc.
General Contractor: Wolfe Brand Construction Inc.

This residence is located in the high, arid foothills outside of Carbondale and was designed to meet the owners' goal of creating an environmentally friendly home that fits the climate, site and local architectural vernacular - with the expected modern-day comforts and quality finishes.

Jury Comments: "We feel that this house hits most of the sustainable categories - it should be commended for its intentions and the success of achieving its goals." "The plan is very simple, very strong; it conveys a feeling of a rich materials palette."

Merit Awards

Ferguson Residence
Architect: CCY Architects
Owner: David and Kathy Ferguson
Engineers: Monroe & Newell Engineers, Radar Engineering
General Contractor: George Shaeffer Construction Co.
Construction Manager: George Shaeffer Construction Co.

This house located 8,500 ft high in the mountains is divided into three zones - the main house, the kids' wing and the master suite. It also features an exercise room, natatorium, massage room, painting studio, music studio, game room, bar, wine cellar and theater.

Jury Comments: "We liked the humor in it, the work in it, the references to the mining village and its honest use of materials." "Despite the fact that this is a very expensive house, we admire how modest and sensitive the site has become."

uR.2 House
Architect: Willis Pember Architects Inc.
Owner: Henry & Lana Trettin

uR.2 house - urban/rural/duplex - is a duplex development for a retired couple. The site features panoramic views of Aspen Mountain on one side and a steep butte on the other. The house is organized to embrace outdoor living and enhance connections with the topography.

Jury Comments: "At first, I did not recognize that this is actually a three-unit development." "This addresses a difficult site [between the city and the country] in interesting ways."

Water Place
Architects: Baker Fallin Architects Inc., Gibson Architects LLC, Reno Smith Architects LLC
Owner/Developer: City of Aspen
General Contractor: Rudd Construction

Jury comments: "The jury commends the sense of community achieved while maintaining a balance of individual expression." "The variety of forms and materials is pleasing, yet the individual buildings form a whole."

Citation Awards

Aspen Rec Center
Architect-of-Record: Durrant Architects
Design Architect: Hagman Architects
Owner: City of Aspen
Engineers: Durrant, Keen Engineering
General Contractor: Shaw Construction

This three-level, 81,800-sq-ft rec center houses an NHL-regulation ice rink with seating, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a community youth center. The architecture connects it with the language of the surrounding Colorado mountains.

Jury Comments: "Works well with a difficult program." "We have all seen this [climbing wall] before, but this is well integrated into the space."

Private Residence (Photography by David Marlow)
Architect: Gibson Architects LLC
Owner/Developer: Dr. Bob Karp
Engineers: Monroe & Newell Engineers, Burggraaf Associates
General Contractor: Wodehouse Builders
Interior Design: Studio 133

Jury Comments: "We feel that this house deals with the scale of the large program in a more honest way." "I like the simple, unassuming volumes and the modest use of materials."

Two Creeks Residence
Architect: Bill Poss and Associates
Engineers: Kaup Engineering Inc., Beaudin Ganze Consulting Engineers Inc.
General Contractor: Brikor Associates

Jury Comments: "This submission attempts to break down the scale and does not overwhelm the site." "The interiors are carefully developed with a rich, yet controlled palette of materials."

Writer's Studio
Architect: John Muir Architects Inc.

Jury Comments: "I really like it - the scale of it; it is like a child's tree house or garden folly - the two forms don't seem to have much to do with each other - they don't, as if the middle piece was removed - that is what gives it such charm."
