ACEC Names Colorado's Outstanding Woman in Engineering
Diana Horner, PE, vice president of Bates Engineering Inc.
of Lakewood, has been honored by the American Council of Engineering
Companies of Colorado as Colorado's Outstanding Woman in Engineering.
Horner received top honors for her significant career and
leadership roles as a structural engineer.
Horner has excelled in bridge, water and wastewater treatment
facility design for 30 years. She held one of the highest
positions of leadership recognized by the engineering profession
- chair of the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional
Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors - from 1998 to 2000.
Horner established and managed her own structural engineering
firm - Plains Engineering - from 1984 to 2000, where she was
an instrumental part of the design team for the award-winning
bridges along I-70 through the Glenwood Canyon. Horner also
incorporated the use of draped post-tensioning design for
water tanks - a first-ever use of this system for water tank
design in the United States.
Denver Architectural Foundation Names 2004 Officers
The Denver Architectural Foundation announced the election
on Feb. 9 of Dennis Humphries, AIA, as president of the foundation
and Dr. Frank Traylor as vice president.
William B. Tracy, AIA, was re-elected the foundation's treasurer
and Donald K. Bain, Esq., was re-elected secretary.
Humphries is co-founder and principal at Humphries Poli Architects.
In addition to overseeing several DAF projects in the coming
year, Humphries is past chair of the Dean's Advisory Board
at the University of Colorado-Denver College of Architecture
and Planning and is currently president of the Golden Triangle
Neighborhood Association.
A practicing architect for more than 30 years, Humphries also
chairs the Denver Athletic Club Scholarship Foundation. He
was honored as the 2003 Architect of the Year by the American
Subcontractors Association and has served as past president
for the Colorado Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Traylor brings extensive public policy and administrative
experience to the executive committee of the Foundation. Traylor
serves as chairman of the education subcommittee for the Foundation,
where he heads the innovative Charles "Cal" Cleworth
Legacy Project, based on the foundation's "architecture
is elementary" program.
Traylor headed both the Colorado Departments of Health and
Institutions in the Lamm administration and later served as
both the medical director and president of Lutheran Hospital.
He was elected as a state representative in the mid- and late-70s
and is a past board member of the Denver Foundation.
Tracy, the treasurer for four years and a member of the foundation
since 1994, owns the consulting firm Building Area Measurement
LLC. He is a past president of AIA Denver and AIA Colorado.
With more than 30 years experience in many facets of architecture,
he has twice received the James S. Sudler Award for excellence
in leadership and outstanding contributions to AIA Denver.
Tracy is currently an active member of the Building Owners
and Managers Association.
Bain is a partner in the office of Holme Roberts & Owen
LLP and has practiced law with the firm for more than 40 years.
He has been active in local and state politics for many years
and currently is chairman of the Colorado Council on the Arts.
Bain is a member of the Board of Directors of the Denver Metro
Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Denver Inc. and the Auraria
Foundation.
John Rogers, FAIA, the immediate past president of the DAF
Board of Directors, will continue to serve on the foundation
board. Currently a principal emeritus at RNL Design, Rogers
will be chairman of the foundation's fundraising Hard Hat
Gala planned to take place at the Quigg Newton Auditorium.
Rogers has been a valuable member of many organizations, including
the Citizen Advisory Board for redevelopment of Stapleton,
the Denver Landmark Commission and the University of Colorado
Denver, where he was as an adjunct professor with the College
of Architecture and Planning from 1996-2000.
Current members of the board also include Susan Barnes-Gelt,
Shiela Bisenius, Jack Crawford, Curtis W. Fentress, FAIA,
Dr. Mark Gelernter, Assoc. AIA, and dean of the CU Denver
College of Architecture and Planning, Ted Halsey, AIA, L.
Tyrone Holt, Esq., Dan Igoe, Wendy Kohn, Dr. Thomas Noel,
James F. Paull, AIA, Walter S. Rosenberry, III, and George
Shaw.
The Denver Architectural Foundation's mission is to assist
the public in understanding the impact of architecture on
the quality of life. The foundation was established in 1992.
