ASA Colorado Safety Awards/SMPS Awards/Governor's Awards of Excellence

ASA Colorado recently honored member firms that improved their safety records during the last year.

ASA Colorado Presents 2004 Safety Awards

The American Subcontractors Association of Colorado recognized safety award winners at its first-ever Excellence in Safety awards banquet held in late September at the Warwick Denver Hotel.

The winners were:

  • Under 25,000 Man-Hours - Absolute Caulking and Waterproofing
  • 25,000-100,000 Man-Hours - Veit Specialty Maintenance
  • 100,000-200,000 Man-Hours - Braconier Plumbing and Heating
  • 200,000-500,000 Man-Hours - Delta Dry Wall Inc. and Total Plumbing Inc.
  • 500,000-1 Million Man-Hours - South Valley Drywall Inc.
  • Over 1 Million Man-Hours - Kimsey-Guarantee Electric
  • Most Improved Safety Program - Total Plumbing Inc.
  • Best Overall Safety Program - Kimsey-Guarantee Electric

The awards committee was chaired by Dennis Walker of RSC, with member participants that included Ron Wilson, vice president of operations for M.A. Mortenson; Stephen Miller, safety director for M.W. Golden Constructors; and Brian Maria, safety consultant, HRH of Colorado.

Banquet sponsors were ASAC Workers Comp Program providers Pinnacol Assurance and HRH of Colorado.


SMPS Colorado Names BWR's Plein 2004 Member of the Year

Helene Plein of Bucher Willis Ratliff in Denver was named the 2004 Member of the Year during the recent SMPS Colorado annual awards luncheon. Other 2004 winners announced were:

  • Advertising - DTJ Design Inc.
  • Target Market - Saunders Construction Inc.
  • Company Identity - EDAW
  • Special Events - Haselden Construction Inc.

Downtown Projects Honored with Governor's Awards

Colorado's most outstanding downtown and neighborhood district projects were honored in September at the second annual Governor's Awards for Downtown Excellence luncheon in Fort Collins.

Lt. Gov. Jane Norton presented awards in six categories during the event, held in conjunction with the Colorado Community Revitalization Association's annual statewide conference.

The winners were:

Best Design Project

  • Special Achievement Award - Champa Terrace Townhomes, Denver
  • Merit Award - The Book Stop Retail Addition and Lofts, Greeley
  • Merit Award - 701 Grand Building, Glenwood Springs

Best Economic Development Project

  • Special Achievement Award - Englewood Commercial Catalyst Program, Englewood

Main Street Award of Excellence

  • Special Achievement - Greeley Downtown Plaza Renovation, Greeley

Best Partnership Effort

  • Special Achievement - In-Situ Relocation, Fort Collins
  • Merit Award - Main Street Revitalization Program, Wheat Ridge

Best Promotion Project

  • Merit Award - Bid It Up For Bromwell, Denver

Colorful Colorado Award

  • Merit Award - Durango Blooms, Durango

MSCD Surveying Program Earns ABET Accreditation

The Surveying & Mapping Degree Program at Metropolitan State College of Denver has received accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology - the only such program in a seven-state area to be accredited.

The program began the accreditation process in July 2002.

ABET Inc. - the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology - is a federation of 30 professional and technical societies representing these fields. It currently accredits some 2,500 programs at 550-plus colleges and universities nationwide.

 


ABC Revamps Its Try Tools Web Site

Associated Builders and Contractors has launched its redesigned Try Tools Web site at www.trytools.org. The new site highlights career opportunities in the construction industry and offers educational resources for elementary and high school students, as well as parents and teachers.

The site includes a virtual jobsite tour and a section for high school students that details the career opportunities and earning potentials within the skilled trades, construction management and design and engineering fields. It also offers parents and teachers ideas for construction-related activities and access to educational material - including the construction career path poster, which outlines ABC's concept of lifelong learning.
