DRCOG Says Growth Seen Primarily in Infill
Developments
The Denver Regional Council of Governments released in January
population and household estimates for 2005 that show local
growth occurring principally as infill development in areas
such as Stapleton, the Central Platte Valley, Belmar, Skyline
Estates and Lowry.
According to DRCOG, communities on the north end of the metro
area are showing strong growth in new home construction.
DRCOG's estimates show a rate of growth in 2004 of 1.8 percent,
below the region's average of the past five years. Also, in
2004, the metro area added 20,000 new housing units for a
total of 1.1 million.
Communities on the north end of the metro area, including
Commerce City, Thornton, Brighton and Arvada, are showing
strong housing growth trends. Commerce City, better known
for its industry, added 1,810 new housing units in 2004 for
a total of 5,078 new housing units since 2000.
DRCOG's estimates show a large number of new housing units
being built along the E-470 corridor. Two-thirds of Aurora's
housing unit growth occurred along E-470. Thornton and Commerce
City also saw about half of their expansion in the corridor.
CU Solar Decathlon Team Will Defend Title
in 2007
The University of Colorado at Boulder will defend its title
as reining champs of the Solar Decathlon in 2007, the U.S.
Department of Energy announced.
CU-Boulder is among 20 teams selected through a proposal
system to compete in the 2007 Solar Decathlon, set for October
on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Colorado won the previous
two Solar Decathlons, in 2002 and 2005.
Each of the teams will be awarded $100,000 over two years
to support the Solar Decathlon's research goal of reducing
the cost of solar-powered homes and advancing solar technology.
Held every other year, the Solar Decathlon brings teams from
universities across the United States, Europe and Canada to
compete in designing, building and operating highly energy-efficient,
completely solar-powered houses. For more information, go

ASCE Group Seeks Comments on Rehabilitation
Standard
The Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society
of Civil Engineers is conducting a public comment period through
March 21 on the newly developed professional standard, "Seismic
Rehabilitation for Existing Buildings."
This standard specifies nationally applicable provisions
for the seismic rehabilitation of existing buildings and is
intended for use by code officials in jurisdictionally mandated
seismic rehabilitation programs or for reference by building
owners and design professionals in voluntary rehabilitation
efforts.
The procedures contained in the standard are specifically
applicable to the rehabilitation of existing buildings and
are not intended for implementation in new building codes.
Many new building codes include provisions that encourage
or require the development of designs with features important
for good seismic performance; however, many existing buildings
were designed without such features.
To participate, contact ASCE Standards Administrator Eileen
Boeing at eboeing@asce.org
or 703-295-6338.
