ABC and AGC Honor Colorado Contractors/HCC
Names Annual Award Winners/ACEC/CO Recognizes Top Women Engineers
Colorado fared well this year at
the national conventions for both the Associated Builders
and Contractors and the Associated General Contractors of
America. Two projects in the state received ABC Excellence
in Construction awards while AGC honored several Colorado
contractors with Aon Build America and Willis Safety Awards.
ABC Honors Colorado Projects,
CSU Among the Top of 2005
Two Colorado projects were recognized earlier this year by
Associated Builders and Contractors as among the nation's
top 2005 construction projects.
The University of Denver's Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium
and New Life Church in Colorado Springs were named winners
of Excellence in Construction awards at the 2006 ABC National
Convention in Las Vegas.
Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium won in the Institutional -
Under $5 Million category. Denver's Pinkard Construction Co.
was the contractor, with design by TSP/David Owen Tryba Architects.
Spacecon Specialty Contractors won for New Life Church in
the Interior Contractor category. The project was designed
by James W. Nakai and Associates.
Colorado State University's student chapter of ABC was also
honored at the convention - it won the association's 2006
Student Chapter Award of Excellence.
MTECH Mechanical Technologies Group in Denver was named a
2005 national safety excellence award winner in the SIC 17
- Specialty Construction category.
Colorado Companies Win
AGC Aon Build America Awards
Eighteen projects, including five by Colorado contractors,
won 2006 Aon Build America Awards at the Associated General
Contractors' 87th annual convention in Palm Springs in March.
The winning projects built by Colorado contractors were:
Design-Build Renovation
- Beartooth Highway Emergency Repairs, Red Lodge, Mont.
- Kiewit Western Co., Littleton; and JTL Group Inc., Belgrade,
Mont.
- Atlas V SLC 3E Activation, Vandenberg AFB, Calif. - Hensel
Phelps Construction Co., Greeley
Building - New
- Colorado Convention Center Expansion, Denver - Hensel
Phelps/Walker/Alvarado, a joint venture
Highway- New
- Cooper River Bridge, Charleston, S.C. - Palmetto Bridge
Constructors, a joint venture of Tidewater Skanska Inc.,
Virginia Beach, Va.; and Flatiron Constructors Inc., Longmont
Environmental - New
- Benicia Wetlands Mitigation, Benicia, Calif. - Flatiron's
California subsidiary, FCI Constructors.
Safety Awards
Four Colorado companies were named winners of the seventh
annual AGC/Willis Construction Safety Excellence Awards, also
presented during the association's convention. They were:
- MTECH Mechanical Technologies Group, Denver - first place,
Specialty Contractor, 100,001-300,000 work hours;
- Haselden Construction LLC, Centennial - second place,
Building Division, 300,001-700,000 work hours;
- RK Mechanical Inc., Denver - third place, Specialty Contractor,
over 1 million work hours; and
- Hensel Phelps Construction Co., Greeley - third place,
Building Division, over 1 million work hours.
HCC Presents 16th Annual Awards
The Hispanic Contractors of Colorado honored Denver Councilman
Rick Garcia at the association's 16th annual awards banquet
earlier this year.
Garcia received the Community Advocate Award for his ongoing
efforts to include business training and contracting opportunities
for minority/women/small businesses in economic revitalization
efforts, access to new transit projects and business development.
He was also cited for his contributions to the T-REX SBE/DBE
Incentive Program and his support of the ballot initiatives
for the FasTracks and Denver Justice Center projects.
Other awards presented by HCC were:
- Board Member of the Year - John C. Olson Jr., AMI Mechanical
Inc.;
- General Contractor of the Year - Pinkard Construction
Co.;
- Subcontractor of the Year - AMI Mechanical Inc.;
- Service Company of the Year - CRS Insurance Brokerage;
- Supplier Company of the Year - United Rentals;
- Emerging Business of the Year - LEI Companies Inc.
- Large General Contractor Safety Award - J.E. Dunn Construction
Co.;
- Small General Contractor Safety Award - Torix General
Contractors;
- Large Subcontractor Safety Award - AMI Mechanical Inc.;
and
- Small Subcontractor Safety Award - LEI Companies Inc.
Pinnacol Assurance sponsored the HCC Safety Awards, with
the winners selected by the HCC Group Workers' Compensation
Program Safety Committee.
HCC also presented the Past President's Award to Leneé
Koch, LEI Companies; Board Service Award to Juan Alvidrez,
Plaza Construction; and 10-year membership awards to Compass
Insurance/Olson & Olson Division and Lockton Companies.
CSI Launches MasterFormat.com
The Construction Specifications Institute launched MasterFormat.com
and kicked off the MasterFormat Maintenance Program during
the 50th annual CSI Show and Convention, held last month in
Las Vegas.
Putting MasterFormat on the Web at www.MasterFormat.com allows
the resource to be updated in real-time and provide an easily
searchable database for quick and thorough reference.

ACEC/CO Honors Women and 'New Faces'
The American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado
recognized Colorado's Outstanding Women in Engineering and
New Faces in Engineering at the close of this year's Engineering
Week festivities.
ACEC/ CO honored two Outstanding Women in Engineering this
year - Marvinetta Hartwig and Patricia Flood.
The association also named its "New Faces": Mary
Presecan, project engineer, Leonard Rice; Laura Girard, water
resources engineer intern, Ayres Associates; Gwendolyn Zuber,
engineer-in-training and project engineer, Richard P. Arber
Associates Inc; Donald Frick, water resource engineer, Applegate
Group Inc.; Lisa Farmer, also a water resource engineer at
Applegate Group; and Craig Ullmann, PE, Applegate Group.
