Rocky Mountain ACI Honors 17 Projects/ABC
Names Safety and Scholarship Winners/AIA South Launches New
Community Program
More than 170 people attended the
Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Concrete Institute's
38th annual concrete awards this spring, where 17 projects
were honored for their overall excellence.
ACI Awards Highlight the
Best Projects of 2006
The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Concrete Institute
held its 38th annual concrete awards this spring, honoring
17 projects. The winners were:
- Transportation - Award of Excellence, Front Range Air
Traffic Control Tower, Watkins; Award of Merit, Broomfield
Medians and Intersections.
- Water Resources - Award of Excellence - Milliken Wastewater
Treatment Plant; Award of Merit, National Wind Technology
Center, Golden.
- Parking Structures - Award of Excellence, Auraria Higher
Education Center Parking Garage, Denver; Awards of Merit,
Denver Health Parking Garage and Rose Medical Center Parking,
Denver.
- Unique Use of Concrete - Award of Excellence, Colorado
Residence, Denver; Awards of Merit, Boundary Marker and
Sign at Centerra, Loveland; and Tunnels Park, Broomfield.
- Unique Use of Masonry - Award of Excellence, Red Hawk
Ridge Elementary School, Centennial.
- Public Buildings over $10 Million - Award of Excellence,
Colorado Springs Utilities Water Testing Laboratory; Award
of Merit - El Paso County Jail, Colorado Springs.
- Public Buildings under $10 Million - Award of Excellence,
Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, University of Denver.
- Private/Commercial over $5 Million - Award of Excellence,
Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center.
- Private/Commercial under $5 Million - Award of Excellence,
Creekside 5A Office Building, Arvada; Award of Merit, Hall-Irwin
Corp. Office Building, Milliken.
- Residential Concrete - Award of Excellence, Corson Residence,
The Pinery, Parker.
- Judges Award - Award of Excellence, Southbound I-25 to
Eastbound I-270 Flyover, Denver.
ACE Mentor Program Awards
Scholarships to Nine Students
The local chapter of the ACE Mentor Program of America -
created to groom students for careers in architecture, engineering
and construction - presented scholarships in May to nine area
high schoolers:
- East High School - Benjamin Dixon and Amy Livingston,
$5,000; and Kalen Hayes and Yolanda Poma, $2,500
- Kennedy High School - Robert Fritz, $2,500
- Montbello High School - Ricardo Mendez, Amaechi Nwankwo
and Ogemdi Isiguzo, $5,000; and Juan Martinez, $2,500.
ABC Names 2006 Safety & Education Winners
The Associated Builders and Contractor's Rocky Mountain Chapter
honored several Colorado contractors this spring for their
safety records and programs and awarded scholarships to four
high schoolers.
The winners were:
- Most Improved Safety Program - Pinkard Construction Co.
- Outstanding Safety Record, General Contractors - Up to
50 Employees, dcb Construction; 51 to 100 Employees, Roche
Constructors Inc.; 101 to 200 Employees, Adolfson &
Peterson Construction; More than 200 Employees, Western
Summit Constructors.
- Outstanding Safety Record, Subcontractors - Up to 50
Employees, McBride Electric; 51 to 100 Employees, Greiner
Electric; 101 to 200 Employees, Design Mechanical; More
than 200 Employees, Heating & Plumbing Engineers.
- Outstanding Safety Program, General Contractors - Under
$15 Million in Volume, Stanek Constructors; $15 - $50 Million
in Volume, CFC Construction; Over $50 Million in Volume
(tie), TIC - Rocky Mountain Region, and Western Summit Constructors.
- Outstanding Safety Program, Subcontractors - Under 75,000
Man Hours, Interstate Electrical Contractors; 75,000 to
250,000 Man Hours, Quality Electric Co.; 250,000 to 500,000
Man Hours, Design Mechanical; Over 500,000 Man Hours, LPR
Construction.
The chapter annually presents up to four $1,000 scholarships
through the Bob Piper Construction Education Scholarship Fund,
named after local businessman Bob Piper of Piper Electric
in Arvada.
This year's winners are Kyle Casper, Swink High School, Rocky
Ford; Maria Delgado, Fort Collins High School; Jared Groves,
Lakewood; and Zach Stapleton, Green Mountain High School and
Warren Tech.
AIA South Launches Community Service Program
AIA Colorado South was awarded a $10,000 grant by the American
Institute of Architects in Washington, D.C. to launch "Great
Streets/Great Skyline."
Part of AIA's new, nationwide community service program,
"Blueprint for America: A Gift to the Nation," AIA
Colorado South's initiative is meant to be a gift to the Colorado
Springs community, with members' participation provided for
free.
The initiative will encourage discussion, educate the public
about the value of good design and establish a process of
encouraging quality architecture. Chapter members working
in cooperation with the Colorado Springs Downtown Partnership
and allied design professionals; the city planning department
will be involved in describing the downtown area's future
form, character and design elements.
ACEC-CO Names Awards Recipients
The American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado
presented five people with 2006 honors for outstanding achievements
in the engineering industry and support of the council and
its public objectives.
They are:
- David Stewart, PE, president of Stewart Environmental
Construction, who received the Orley O. Phillips Award,
the council's top honor;
- Karen Hunter, science education consultant and St. Vrain
School District's math, engineering and science MESA coordinator,
who was named Educator of the Year;
- Mike Applegate, president of Applegate Group Inc., who
received the George Washington Award for outstanding community
service;
- Bernard Amadei, PhD., professor of civil engineering
at the University of Colorado at Boulder, who was presented
with the General Palmer Award.
- Adrienne Thiele, president of üli Creative LLC Public
Relations, who received the President's Award.
New Site Turns Students on to Electrifying
Careers
The National Electrical Contractors Association and International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have launched a new Web
site - "You've Got the Power" - that offers students
a direct connection for exploring careers in the electrical
industry.
Located at www.electrifyingcareers.com, the new site presents
students, parents and guidance counselors with an information-rich
starting point to discover the diverse opportunities available
to young people who choose to become electrical workers.
