Engineering Council Names Student Honorees/SMPS Presents Excellence Awards/ULI Colorado and Denver Project Win ULI Acclaim
ACEC/CO Names Recipients of 2007 Scholarships
The American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado awarded $26,500 in student scholarships this year to promote the study of engineering. Since 2000 the council has given more than $155,000 in student engineering scholarships.
This year’s recipients are John Avery, Matthew Eberly and Ravi Singaraju, Colorado State University; Brad Bettag and Phillip Wolfram, Colorado School of Mines; Alex Ennor, University of Colorado at Boulder; and James Foreman, CU-Denver.
Rebecca Travers, a home-schooled student; and Gavin Griffith, of Rifle High School; each received a $500 scholarship for their bridge design entries in the annual high school bridge building contest, co-sponsored by the Professional Engineers of Colorado and the Bureau of Reclamation.
ACEC/CO also awarded $1,000 to the Colorado Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement program.
Scholarship funding is provided by council members, the American Public Works Association and private sources. Money is also raised through ACEC/CO’s annual member/guest golf tournament, set for Aug. 23 at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Club in Castle Rock.

Engineering Council Also Names New Board
ACEC/CO also named its 2007-2008 board officers. Brien Gidlow of HDR Inc. is president; Lauren Evans of Pinyon Environmental Engineering Resources Inc. is vice president; and Robert Refvem of Felsburg Holt & Ullevig is secretary/treasurer.
New members of the board of directors are Heather Reavey, HNTB Corp.; John Clark, RMG Engineers; and James Lenzotti, Tetra Tech Inc. They joined six other board members who will continue to serve their terms: Scott Beck, Anderson & Hastings CE Inc.; Gregory Fischer, Shannon & Wilson Inc.; Thomas Hartmann, TW Hartmann Inc; Michael Sayler, Bishop-Brogden Associates Inc.; and national director Mark Hamouz, LONCO Inc.
Stuart Monical of MKK Consulting Engineers is the immediate past president.
SMPS Colorado Names Winners of Marketing Excellence Awards
Six firms were honored during SMPS Colorado’s annual marketing excellence awards in May.
The winners were JG Johnson, Web site; Western Summit Contractors Inc., internal newsletter and internal communications; KTGY Group Inc., holiday piece; Ricca Newmark Design, brochure; The Weitz Co., media relations and corporate identity; and CTL/Thompson Inc., direct mail.
KTGY Group was also presented with the “People’s Choice” award for its holiday marketing materials.
ULI Colorado Wins Community Action Grant
The Urban Land Institute named ULI Colorado one of five recipients of semi-annual funding through its community action grants program.
ULI Colorado received a $20,000 grant to partner with the City and County of Denver and the University of Denver to expand the representation of women and minorities within the real estate development field.
The program will provide academic training through the University of Denver Real Estate School in combination with year-long paid apprenticeships with private developers. A speakers series will bring nationally recognized developers to Denver to advance a better understanding of land use and support development of a professional network for women and minorities in the real estate field.
The award was one of five grants totaling $120,000 announced in May during ULI’s Spring Council Forum in Chicago.
CITC Graduates 39 Apprentices

AIA Names Recipients of Pettigrew Scholarship
The American Institute of Architects’ national associates committee selected two recipients of the second annual Jason Pettigrew Memorial ARE Scholarship, named for a young Denver architect who died while mountain climbing in July 2004. They are Catherine Grace Rumbley, Assoc. AIA; and Emmanuel Ramirez Quiñones, Assoc. AIA.
Honored in May at the AIA National Convention and Design Expo in San Antonio, Rumbley and Quiñones will receive more than $1,000 to cover the current cost of the Architect Registration Examination and a full set of study guides from Kaplan AEC Education.

Highlands Garden Village Wins ULI Honor
Highlands Garden Village in Denver was one of 10 developments from North America named winners this year of the Urban Land Institute’s Awards for Excellence: The Americas competition.
Highlands Garden Village, developed by Perry Rose LLC and Jonathan Rose Cos., is located on the original 27-acre site of Denver’s first amusement park, Elitch Gardens.
The mixed-use, mixed-income community is a model for diverse, environmentally and socially sensitive infill redevelopment. It preserves many of the original 1890s buildings, adds 306 residential units, including affordable, senior and co-housing, along with retail and restaurant spaces, a school, theater and open space.
The winners were chosen from a field of 23 finalists among 170 entries. Marilee Utter, president of Citiventure Associates LLC in Denver, was among the judges.
ABC RMC Presents Safety Awards, Scholarships
The Rocky Mountain Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors held its annual safety and scholarship awards banquet in May.
Sixteen member firms were recognized for outstanding safety achievements and 39 companies received STEP awards—two of which will be honored later this year at the national level. Four high school students were also presented with scholarships worth $1,000 each.
