ACE Mentors of Colorado Awards Scholarships/ASPE, SDA and CITC Announce New Leadership/ACEC Names Engineering Recognition Award Winners

ACE Mentors of Colorado
Awards Scholarships

The Architecture, Construction and  Engineering Mentor Program of Colorado awarded 11 scholarships totaling $40,000 to students in the Denver area for their participation in the ACE Mentor Program. 

The students who received scholarships at ACE Mentor Program's third annual awards ceremony earlier this year were:

•Johnathan Barajas-Dalton, Long Lin and Paul Pepping, Alameda High School.

•Paulina Medrano and Jamie Novotny, CEC/JFK High School.

•Kerry Fessenden, Trent Kies, Theo Lind, Edmund Mills and Stephen Showalter, East High School.

•Victor Reyes, West High School.

Participating student teams designed a playhouse for the Ronald McDonald House in Aurora and worked with mentors on a request-for-proposal curriculum during the 17-week semester-long program.


ASPE Denver Chapter 5
Elects New Officers and Board

The American Society of Professional Estimators Denver Chapter 5 has elected new officers and board members for 2007-2008. They are

•President—Kye Holtan-Brown, Haselden Constructionl.

•1st Vice President—Heather Boulanger, Rolling Plains Construction

•2nd Vice President—Kirk Lundquist, Heggem-Lundquist

•Secretary—Tyler Elward, Gen3 Construction

•Treasurer—Newt Klusmire, Swinerton Builders

•Immediate Past President—Ralph Kasper, Adolfson & Peterson

•Board Members—Tom Bandy, Alutiig LLC; Warren Neubauer, AMI Mechanical; Eric Ross, MC2; and Henry Zurbrugg, Golden Triangle Construction Inc.


Colorado Industry Training
Council Names Leadership

The Construction Industry Training Council named its 2007-2008 officers and board of directors.  

The officers are president, Pete LeClair, Hensel Phelps Construction Co.; president-elect, Ted “Smitty” Smith, Ludvik Electric; and treasurer, Brian Rogers, Rogers & Sons.

Members of the board of directors are Dan Adams, MTech; Dennis Ashley, Haselden Construction; Pem Eberlein, A P Eberlein Co.; Steve Foote, Greiner Electric; Tom Foster, Central Mechanical; Mathew Johnson, M.A. Mortenson Co.; Scott McMurdo, RSC; Mike McQuaig, Total Plumbing; Tom Noland, Associated Builders and Contractors; Mark Shaw, McGraw-Hill Construction Publications; Tim Van Stelle, Duro Electric; Jim Van Zant, Calcon Constructors; and Tim Williams, Fransen Pittman.


SDA Denver Chooses
Officers and Directors
 

The Denver Chapter of the Society for Design Administration has named its officers and directors for 2007-2008. They are:

•President, Lou Ann Hight, SlaterPaull Architects

•Vice President, Jill Wyatt, H+L Architecture

•Secretary, Savannah Jameson, S.A. Miro Inc.

•Treasurer, Crystal Lutgens, Intergroup Architects

•Directors, Anne McNeely, Gensler; Sheila Steinbock, Martin/Martin Inc.

•Past President/Director, Pomelia Bowers, The RMH Group Inc.

In addition, Debra Ellis of Barker Rinker Seacat was elected as SDA's national president, and Lou Ann Hight received certification from SDA at the national convention in May.


ACEC/CO Names Engineering
Recognition Award Winners 

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado recently announced the recipients of its 2007 Engineering Recognition Awards.  

•Hal Simpson, recently retired Colorado state engineer, received the General Palmer Award for his contributions to Colorado and advancement of the engineering community.

•Lauren Evans, principal of Pinyon Environmental Engineering Resources Inc., received the George Washington Award for outstanding community service.

• The Orley O. Phillips Award for an ACEC/CO member or staff member who has made significant contribution to the engineering profession, ACEC/CO and its programs, was presented to Sondra Donnel. Donnel recently retired after serving 25 years as the council’s executive director.

• Ginger DeCavitch, an eighth-grade science and U.S. history teacher at Mount Garfield Middle School, was named 2007 Educator of the Year for her contributions to and support of math, science and engineering programs. 

 • Nancy Whitsel of Performance Resources Consulting, received the President's Award for her work in developing supervisory and management programs to train future engineering leaders.


ABC Western Colorado Honors
STEP and Safety Award Winners 

ABC Western awarded its 2006 national Safety Training and Evaluation Process and Excellence in Safety awards earlier this summer.

STEP Award winners at the platinum level were EC Electric Inc. and FCI Constructors Inc. Gold-level award recipients were Accurate Construction and Excavation Inc., Extreme Construction & Development Corp., Grand Mesa Mechanical Inc., Mays Concrete Inc., Pyramid Instrumentation & Electric Corp., Reams Construction Co. and Skyline Contracting Inc.

Silver-level award winners were Lunsford Brothers Mechanical Contractors.

Companies that received safety awards based on local chapter criteria were Accurate Construction and Excavation Inc., Alpine CM Inc., EC Electric Inc., FCI Constructors Inc., Grand Mesa Mechanical Inc., Grand Valley Sheet Metal, Mays Concrete Inc., Pyramid Instrumentation & Electric Corp., Reams Construction Co. and Skyline Contracting Inc.


ABC Western Colorado
Issues Scholarship Challenge

The Western Colorado ABC Chapter has also launched an SOS Staffing scholarship challenge for construction trades education.   

The program will raise money to fund trade education for students throughout the Western Slope who will be enrolling this fall in the ABC Construction Trades and Apprentice Education program. 

SOS Staffing Co. has committed to matching dollar for dollar all contributions made by other entities up to a maximum of $4,000.
