North High School Project Earns Rockies Design Award
The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International recently awarded the North High School Historic Preservation, Renovation and Addition design project the Rockies Design Award.
Humphries Poli Architects, in association with klipp, both of Denver, were hired by Denver Public Schools to complete a campus master plan for North High School in 2004. The primary goals of the plan were to provide 21st Century educational facilities, support ongoing educational reform, encourage beneficial community and school alliances and rehabilitate and preserve the historic North High School buildings.
Phased implementation included historic preservation during the first phase and an addition and expansion in the second. The renovation and addition portion of this project has been put on hold by DPS, with the completion of design contingent on a future school district bond issue. Castle Rock-based White Construction Group is the general contractor.
ABC Honors Two Firms with Community Service Awards
White Construction Group, a Castle Rock general contractor, and Tom Tarver of Greiner Electric, were jointly awarded the Dick Goodman Community Service Award by the Associated Builders and Contractors Rocky Mountain Chapter.
The award honors individuals or companies that contribute to a community service effort. The award was given to White Construction Group and Tarver for their work on the Brandon Burke project, which made a mobile home handicapped accessible for Burke, an injured veteran.
Burke was serving as a combat medic in Baghdad in 2005 when he was hit with a mortar and permanently disabled. He returned to Colorado after rehabilitating in a hospital in San Antonio for five months and is currently pursuing a career in medicine.
Tarver spearheaded the project, and White Construction Group managed it, teaming with American Military Family Inc., a nonprofit that provides services to members of the U.S. military and their families.
