President Signs ACEC Loan Forgiveness Program To Address Engineer Shortage
The Higher Education Reauthorization and College Opportunity Act of 2008, signed into law in August by President Bush, provides up to $10,000 in student loan forgiveness for students seeking science, technology, engineering and math-related professions of “national need.”
The American Council of Engineering Cos. ensured that the bill also included engineering among the eligible professions.
When implemented, engineering students will qualify for up to $10,000, receiving $2,000 a year in credit against outstanding student loan obligation following graduation and entry into an engineering career.
Now that the bill has become law, the Department of Education is developing regulations for the program, and Congress must find a way to fund it. ACEC is working with the agency and Congress to ensure that the new program benefits as many engineering students as possible.
