Class of 2005 Graduates/ABC Presents Safety Awards
ACEC/CO Announces Awards, Installs
New 2005-06 Officers
The American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado
recently announced scholarships and awards and installed its
2005-2006 officers in late spring.
Scholarships
ACEC/CO scholarships are awarded to students who have earned
high levels of academic achievement and are pursuing a bachelor's
of science degree in engineering at an ABET-accredited school.
The association presented $19,500 in scholarships this year.
The recipients were:
- William Russell Stoneman Scholarship
- Kevin Owens, architectural
engineering, University of Colorado at Boulder;
- Malcolm and Charles Meurer Memorial
Scholarship - Anna Birely,
civil engineering, CU-Boulder;
- Fu Hua Chen Scholarship
- Megan Rae McKee, mechanical
engineering, Colorado School of Mines;
- ACEC/CO Scholarships - Alice
Kaminski, chemical/biological engineering, CU-Boulder; Megan
Christian, architectural engineering; CU-Boulder; and John
Treinen, mechanical engineering, University of Denver; and
- Jack Bruce Memorial APWA Scholarship
- Mellisa Marie Robson, civil
engineering, Colorado State University.
Educator of the Year
Michael Almeda, a sixth-grade teacher at Heaton Middle School
in Pueblo, was named ACEC/CO's Educator of the Year. He was
honored for his outstanding contributions to and support of
programs in math, science and engineering.
Industry Honors
- Charles Meurer, PE, received
the Orley O. Phillips Award, given annually to an ACEC/CO
member who has made significant contributions to the engineering
profession, the council and its programs. The posthumous
award was accepted by members of Meurer's family.
- Phil Cardi received the President's
Award for his outstanding individual efforts as a legal
resource to the council, a supporter of tort reform legislation
and his work in assisting ACEC/CO firms with better risk-management
programs.
- A. Ray Chamberlain, PE, PhD, received
the George Washington Award for Leadership, which recognizes
outstanding service to the community and the progress of
Colorado, including the enhancement of consulting engineering
as a profession.
- Steven R. Abt, PE, PhD, received
the General Palmer Award, which honors contributions to
the engineering community, significant contributions to
research, and dedication to both Colorado State University
and the U.S. Army.

SDA Denver Chapter Elects New Officers for
2005-2006
The Denver Chapter of the Society of Design Administration
installed its 2005-2006 board of directors on June 6.

Lou Ann Hight, SlaterPaull Architects, treasurer; Crystal

CITC Graduates Its Class of 2005
The Construction Industry Training Council of Colorado presented
certificates of completion to 49 apprentices at its 2005 graduation
ceremony on May 7 at the Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities.
Ray Drinkwater, a foreman at Greiner Electric LLC in Littleton,
who was named as the Associated Builders and Contractors 2005
Craft Professional of the Year, was the keynote speaker.
ABC Recognizes Member Firms for Safety Excellence
The Associated Builders and Contractor recognized several
Colorado contractors for excellence in the area of safety.
The awards were presented in May at the Rocky Mountain Chapter's
local 2005 Safety & Education Awards Banquet.
Safety Training and Evaluation Process - or STEP - awards
are granted by ABC's national office based on applications
submitted by member companies. This year's winners are:
