Memorial Hospital Parking Garage Complete

J.E. Dunn Construction has announced the completion of the new parking garage and north entrance to Memorial Hospital's $30.1 million expansion, following more than a year of construction. The completion means easier access to the hospital for the general public and the staff, as well as the convenience of ample parking.

The new seven-level, precast parking garage on the north side of the medical campus adds 1,500 parking spaces with four elevators - two for general public use and two for the staff. The parking structure is tied into the new north entrance as well as the campus tunnel system for direct access to the building. The architect on the project was Charles L.T. Smith & Associates.


Stupa Concrete May Aid Chernobyl

Fort Collins-based Ryalcor is testing the concrete used in the Tibetan-style sacred building known as The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya at the Shambhala Mountain Center near Red Feather Lakes. Tests are being conducted to determine the concrete's potential for use in containing ongoing poisonous radiation from the 1986 nuclear disaster of Chernobyl, Ukraine.

The Great Stupa itself took 15 years, 6.4 million lbs of concrete and $2.5 million in donations to build. At 108 ft tall, it is the largest example of Tibetan sacred architecture in the West and is expected to last for 1,000 years.


Ground Broken for Syracuse Village at Stapleton

Former Denver Mayor Wellington E. Webb and other city officials joined BMW Realty Group to break ground on Palace Construction's newest project, Syracuse Village at Stapleton.

The 78-unit condominium and two-story townhomes totaling 73,158 sq ft will be built with a hometown feel with tree-lined streets and spacious parks where almost every convenience is within a 10-minute walk. All structures will consist of post-tension slabs, two-by-six exterior walls for thermal insulation and asphalt roofing. The project will also include all associated site work.


Rude Recreation Center Now Open

Denver's Parks and Recreation Department recently celebrated the grand opening of the $7.9 million Rude Recreation Center. The state-of-the-art center replaced an outdated facility on the same inner-city site just southeast of Colfax and Federal Boulevard near Invesco Field at Mile High.

Rude (pronounced 'Rudy') offers recreation facilities and youth programs to an estimated 3,500 children and 1,700 adults annually.

The 42,000-sq-ft facility houses a lap and leisure pool, sprayground, gymnasium, weight room, arts and crafts room, lockers, a full kitchen and multi-use spaces. The Rude weight room is the largest public weight room in the city.

The architect was The Roybal Corp.; Jacobs Facilities served as facilities manager, and the general contractor was the Colorado Division of Skanska USA Building Inc.


Olsson Associates Wins New Projects

Olsson Associates' Lakewood office has announced several new projects.

The firm is providing civil site design for the 24-acre Centennial Center at Parker and Arapahoe Road for Crestone Management and Kelmore Development Corp.

The firm is also providing complete surveying and civil site design services to Coventry Development Corp. for the new Super Target in Lone Tree.

New Brinker International projects include Chili's in Montrose and Lone Tree.

Site design for two spec buildings is being provided to Waner Construction at the Reynolds Industrial Park in Douglas County.

Civil design is being provided for two new churches - Cherry Creek Presbyterian in Greenwood Village and Heritage Church in Jefferson County.

Neenan recently selected Olsson Associates to continue civil design services at the existing Golden Ridge medical office park. The firm will be designing the site improvements for the Golden Ridge Rehab Center, a joint venture of Panorama Orthopedic Center, Centura St. Anthony Hospitals and National Rehab Partners.


Ground Broken for New Littleton Fire Station #12

The Colorado division of Skanska USA Building Inc. broke ground in July on the new Fire Station #12 for the City of Littleton.

The Littleton Volunteer Fire Department built the existing station #12 in 1960. The facility has become obsolete by current fire service standards and does not meet the needs of today's equipment and personnel.

A new state-of-the-art, 13,800-sq-ft facility will replace the existing station on a 1.5-acre site. The architectural firm Davis/Jones designed a facility that will meet 21st Century emergency response needs while aesthetically blending with the neighborhood.
Station #12 will include two truck bays, separate facilities for men and women, plus offices, kitchen and dining quarters.


Mortenson Awarded Contract to Build UCHSC Fitzsimons Medical Library

Mortenson has been selected as the construction manager/general contractor for the new 116,000-sq-ft University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Medical Library at Fitzsimons, the focal point of the new campus. The architectural team is Davis Partnership/Centerbrook.


Arber Associates Selected for Arapahoe County MBR Project

The Arapahoe County Water and Wastewater Authority recently selected consulting engineering firm Richard P. Arber Associates to design upgrades to the Lone Tree Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The Lone Tree Creek plant, located in the Cherry Creek Basin, was the first large-scale membrane bioreactor system installed in the United States. MBR technology was first installed in the facility in 1998 to meet stringent effluent phosphorus limits.

The Lone Tree Creek Plant receives wastewater primarily from commercial and residential customers in the southeastern metropolitan Denver area. Stringent limits on phosphorous in wastewater discharges are required to protect Cherry Creek Reservoir downstream from the plant. The upgrades being designed by Arber Associates include new Zenon MBRs and modifications to improve operational flexibility and reliability.


Ash & White Construction Co. Awarded Two New Projects

Ash & White Construction Co. has been awarded the following projects:

  • Construction of the new Saddle Rock East Recreation Center and Swimming Pool in Aurora.

    The Scheubert Darden-designed recreation center is 1,100 sq ft. The owner is Saddle Rock S. Metro District No. 1.

  • Construction of the new Colorado Community Newspaper building in Castle Rock.

    The project is a new building constructed for ASP Westward, LP D/B/A Colorado Community Newspaper. The facility consists of a new 22,000-sq-ft building designed by River Studio Architects. Construction began on June 26 and is scheduled for completion in December 2003.


    Mundus Bishop Design Announces New Projects

    Mundus Bishop Design Inc. has been awarded three new projects.

    The final design for The Field Open Space in Broomfield will include planning and design for trails and recreation facilities and the restoration of a prairie ecosystem on the 30-acre site.

    Final design for Hamill Park in Georgetown will include detailed design of this signature park for Historic Georgetown Inc. - a series of thematic gardens and terraces adjacent to the historic Hamill House Museum.

    The master plan for the Park County Courthouse Grounds in Fairplay will incorporate new contemporary uses into this significant historic setting.


    Lantz-Boggio Awarded New Educational Contracts

    Lantz-Boggio Architects PC has announced the acquisition of several new K-12 school projects throughout Colorado.

    Two elementary school addition projects for the Durango School District are in the schematic design phase - Sunny Side Elementary School and Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School. Both schools require extensive renovations and additions to the existing buildings.

    Lantz-Boggio has also been contracted to create master plans for Vilas School District and Karval School District. In addition, Manzanola School District has awarded the firm the contract for the interior remodeling of the junior and senior high school in Manzanola.

    In addition, a five-year capital improvement plan has been commissioned by the Archuletta School District. Lantz-Boggio will also be completing the work of remodeling an existing library, including the addition of a new computer lab for Hudson Elementary School in Keenesburg.


    Western Slope Utilities Completes Loveland Interceptor Project

    Western Slope Utilities Inc., a licensee of Inliner Technologies LLC, has completed renewal of more than 13,000 ft of sanitary sewer pipe for the City of Loveland.

    The project entailed installation of Inliner Technologies' method of cured-in-place pipe to rehabilitate the city's largest interceptor line. The 20-year-old reinforced concrete pipe was severely deteriorated from hydrogen sulfide. WSU lined 9,300 ft of 24-in. interceptor pipe and 4,000 ft of collector pipe ranging from six in. to 10 in. in diameter.
    The project was valued at approximately $1.1 million.


    Beck Group Awarded Three New Projects

    The Beck Group has been awarded three new projects.

  • Construction of Cinemark 12 in American Fork, Utah began in April. Cinemark 12 is a 49,479-sq-ft, 12-screen, stadium-style movie theater. The American Fork project will be completed in time for Thanksgiving movie releases.

  • The Cinemark 12 project in Greeley started construction in mid-July. The project is adjacent to the Greeley Mall and is also a 12-screen, stadium-style theater.

    Both Cinemark projects are being delivered with a design-build approach with Beck Architecture as the architect. Cinemark is a national Beck client.

  • Beck was also awarded the Eagle Ranch Medical Office Building in Eagle. The project is a joint venture between Vail Valley Medical Center and Valley View Hospital and is scheduled for completion in 2004.


    GE Johnson Awarded Colorado Springs Utilities Contract

    GE Johnson Construction Co. has been awarded the contract by Colorado Springs Utilities for additions and renovations to its Leon Young Facility. Construction will include a new vehicle maintenance facility, heated vehicle parking, additional employee and visitor parking, a new fueling station and renovations to office spaces.
    Construction will begin this month and be completed in phases over four years. RNL Design is the architect.


    Palace Completes Sheridan Ridge Apartment Complex

    Palace Construction and owner Peregrine Property Trust have announced the completion of Sheridan Ridge Apartments.

    Sheridan Ridge is a wood-framed, 65-unit, nine-building apartment complex, including a clubhouse, on a 4.6-acre site. The scope of work included extensive site utilities and the extension of 66th Avenue to Sheridan Boulevard. Retaining walls were engineered and installed, and a detention pond was incorporated into the project, acting as an onsite park. Handicapped units are included in two of the buildings.


    Pinkard Awarded Two New Projects

    Pinkard is working with architect Keys and Associates of Colorado Springs to upgrade life-safety systems and bring the Lennox and Jackson House dormitories at Colorado College up to code. Preserving the historical integrity of the buildings is secondary to making the buildings safe.

    Each building is having a second, larger set of stairs added to provide additional fire escapes. A new cloverleaf window with intricate scrollwork will be built into an upstairs wall, replacing an outdated fire escape door. The new window will be an exact duplicate of others in the building.

    Pinkard was also awarded the $29 million luxury Delgany Loft project at Delgany Street and Cherry Creek in Denver. The owner is East-West Partners of Denver and the architect is 42|40 Architecture.

    The construction consists of four-story steel-frame condominiums of approximately 111,135 sq ft. The 44 units are priced between $500,000 and $1 million per unit. Floor plan sizes range from 1,200 to 2,400 sq ft.
