Two El Paso County Schools Complete

Nunn Construction Inc. recently completed two elementary schools in El Paso County.
Patriot Elementary - a new 88,000-sq-ft school for El Paso County School District No. 8 located on Fort Carson Army Base - was designed by Christiansen Reece & Partners Inc. The two-story building is a high-tech design with extensive playground and site work. Large atrium-type windows and storefront flood the public spaces with natural lighting.

Soaring Eagles Elementary is a 56,400-sq-ft elementary school for Harrison School District No. 2. It was designed by CSNA Architects Inc.

Also, as the owner's construction manager/general contractor, Nunn Construction recently broke ground for Liberty Wire & Cable's new 39,000-sq-ft corporate office and manufacturing facility in Colorado Springs. The new facility will house 8,500 sq ft of office space and 30,500 sq ft of warehousing, manufacturing and production space.
The architect on the project is Richard A. Keetch Architect. Completion is scheduled for spring 2004.

In addition, Nunn also began work on the new 57,900-sq-ft addition to Fountain/Ft. Carson High School in Fountain, designed by architects Christiansen Reece and Partners. Nunn initially constructed the swimming pool and locker room complex in 1989 and the 200,000-sq-ft high school in 1998. Construction on the new addition began in August.


Weitz to Build Academic Offices for CU Health Sciences Center at Fitzsimons

The Weitz Co. has been selected as the construction manager and general contractor for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center's new 10-story, 180,000-sq-ft West Academic Office Building at the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. The new facility will house the schools of medicine, nursing, dentistry and pharmacy, according to Don Gendall, director of business development at Weitz.

Design and pre-construction planning for the new academic offices will be completed in September 2004. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2004 and will be completed in February 2006. The project architect is Anderson Mason Dale.


Haselden Construction Awarded Sixth Major Project at Fitzsimons

The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center recently awarded the joint venture team of Haselden Construction Inc. and Barton Malow Co. with the new Education Facility II and Academic Office East projects at the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora.

The new project will total 260,000 sq ft and contain classrooms, lecture halls, offices, small group learning rooms, instructional laboratories and student community space.
The building will provide centralized educational space for use by all five schools - medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and the graduate school - as well as providing the office space needs of the CU-Health Sciences Center.

Construction of the $55 million project is slated to begin in October 2004 and complete in spring 2006.


A&P Awarded Maintenance Support Building at Fitzsimons Campus

University of Colorado Health Sciences Center has chosen Adolfson & Peterson Construction as the construction manager and general contractor for its new maintenance support building.

The 60,000-sq-ft building on the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora will house various facilities operations programs and office functions, including campus maintenance shops, mail services and materials management, engineering and building services, fire and safety, grounds maintenance, and parking and transportation services.

The project is in the design and preconstruction services phase through August 2004.
Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2004 and finish November 2005.


GSA Celebrates Completion of Building 25 Renovation

In a ceremony on Sept. 17, the General Services Administration Rocky Mountain Region celebrated the completion of renovations to Building 25 at the Denver Federal Center. In attendance were representatives from the Department of Labor, the Department of Interior, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Building 25 was in need of significant improvements because of the age of the property. The two-year renovation of the two-story office and laboratory facility included exterior and interior repair and modernization, lead and other materials remediation, asbestos abatement, landscaping and irrigation and special laboratory furnishings. The total cost of the renovation was $44 million.


CTL/T Announces Two New Southern Colorado Projects

CTL/Thompson has been selected to work on a correctional facility in Cañon City and a retail center in Pueblo.

The Colorado Department of Corrections selected CTL/T to provide geotechnical engineering, testing and inspection services for a new Colorado State Penitentiary (CSP-II) high custody facility planned for construction in the East Cañon Complex.

Scheduled for completion in 2006, the 948-bed facility will include six vertical levels and four pods - three for housing and the fourth central pod for support services. The East Cañon Complex currently contains seven facilities including CSP-I, in which CTL/T was also involved. CSP-II is to be built near to the Centennial Correction Complex with interconnections to create a multi-custodial facility.

In addition to CSP-II, additions to the central plant, central warehouse and infrastructure are also required. The project is to begin in late 2004 with a projected construction cost of $95 million. The architect is CSNA of Colorado Springs and the structural engineer is Martin/Martin of Denver.

CTL/Thompson has been selected by the Pueblo Marketplace to provide geotechnical engineering, design and inspection services for a new commercial development in northern Pueblo.

The new retail center will have approximately 350,000 sq ft of retail space as well as eight restaurant pads. The main tenant will be Kohl's Department Store, occupying 85,000 sq ft, scheduled to open in 2004. The development will include realignment of North Elizabeth Street and construction of Wills Boulevard.


Colorado Plains Medical Center to Expand

GE Johnson Construction has been awarded a $10 million contract by Colorado Plains Medical Center for the addition of new medical offices in Fort Morgan.

Designed by Davis Partnership Architects, the two-story project includes 44,000 sq ft of new offices and a 17,270-sq-ft lobby connecting the offices to the existing hospital.
Construction will begin in October 2003 and complete in October 2004.


Opus Breaks Ground on Federal DOT Administration Offices Project

Opus Northwest recently broken ground on a $25 million General Services Administration building for the Federal Department of Transportation.

Located on a 6.6-acre site near the intersection of Union Boulevard and Alameda Avenue in Lakewood, the facility will house a number of federal offices. Occupants include the Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Office of Pipeline Safety and the Federal Transit Administration.
The 128,342-sq-ft, three-story office building is scheduled for completion in June 2004.

Opus Northwest is developing the office facility in conjunction with Opus Architects and Engineers.


Mountain States Announces New Projects and Completions

Mountain States Construction Co. Inc. has announced several new projects.

  • The City of Lamar Public Library addition and renovation project consists of 7,000 sq ft of new construction and approximately 7,000 sq ft of renovations to the existing Lamar Public Library. MSCC partnered with Lamar general contractor Camp & Currell Construction. The scheduled completion date is June 1, 2004.

  • The Culberson Medical Office Building project consists of 6,000 sq ft of new construction for a two-story medical office building off Dry Creek Road in Littleton. The scheduled completion date is March/June 2004.

  • The Surgery Center at Park Meadows project consists of 8,400 sq ft of tenant improvements for an ambulatory surgery center with two operating rooms near the Park Meadows Mall in Lone Tree. The scheduled completion date is December 2003.

    MSCC has also announced two project completions.

  • The Jobson Education project consisted of 27,000 sq ft of office tenant improvement at Inverness Drive in Denver. The project was on a 10-week accelerated schedule, starting the second week of July and substantially complete by the end of August.

  • The Lady Fitness Spa project consisted of 14,700 sq ft of design-build masonry block and stone construction for a fitness facility off Park Meadows Drive in Lone Tree.


    New Highlands Ranch Church Breaks Ground

    SlaterPaull Architects has announced the recent groundbreaking for St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch. St. Andrew is relocating from the existing facility at University and Arapahoe because of growth. Currently, it shares parking with a South Suburban recreation center and sits within Dekoevand Park.

    SlaterPaull was instrumental in the relocation of the church and worked closely with St. Andrew and the land developer to orient the church as a focal point for the community. St. Andrew will provide 155,000 sq ft of worship space, seat 1,400 people and offer a chapel accommodating 150. Design of the new church will also offer spaces for music and arts, educational facilities, early learning center and fellowship.

    Saunders Construction is the general contractor.


    Colarelli Announces a New Project and a Completion

    Colarelli Construction was recently awarded the Woodmen Valley Chapel Ministries Building expansion on Woodmen Road west of I-25. The architect, The Larson Group, and its team of sub-consultants are working closely with Colarelli to complete the pre-construction planning and anticipate construction starting on Nov. 1. The 42,000-sq-ft building will be complete by July 2004.

    Also, Colarelli Construction recently completed construction of the first phase for St. Paul Companies in the Garden Gateway Plaza in Colorado Springs. The project was completed two weeks early.

    The following subcontractors helped maintain the schedule commitment: Sprehe Interior Construction, Olson Plumbing & Heating Co., Mech One Inc., Jordan Electric, The Door Co., Leiser Painting & Decorating, Brickwall Fire Protection Inc. and Cab-Con Enterprises Inc.
