Construction to Begin on Spring Creek Elementary

Nunn Construction Inc. started work in March on the new $10.4 million, 95,400-sq-ft Harrison School District Spring Creek K-8 School in Colorado Springs.

The project is a two-story K-8 school building and associated site work. Prime subcontractors include Bochnak Mechanical Inc., West Electric Group, Midwest Drywall Co. Inc., Central States Roofing and Perkey Steel.

Christiansen, Reece and Partners is the project architect.

Joe Plaskett is Nunn's project manager with Berry Scovel as Nunn's onsite superintendent. The project is scheduled for completion in May 2005.

Haselden Completes Rock Canyon High School in Douglas County

Centennial-based Haselden Construction, working with the architectural team of H+L Architecture and LKA Partners, recently completed Douglas County's newest high school five months ahead of schedule.

Rock Canyon High School sits on a 63-acre site in southeast Highlands Ranch and includes tennis courts, baseball, softball and football fields, as well as a track and soccer field. The two-story, 219,000-sq-ft school includes two gymnasiums with locker rooms, plus a cafeteria and a 478-seat auditorium.

Students will be phased into the school starting with 425 ninth and 10th graders when it opens in August 2004.

Design-Build Team Building Excel Academy

The design-build team of Saunders Construction and SlaterPaull Architects recently began work on the new Excel Academy Charter School at 84th Avenue and Simms in Arvada. Founded in 1995, the school is relocating from a strip mall to a 7.2-acre site to serve K-8 students.

Scheduled to be built in only seven months, the $4.1 million, 44,095-sq-ft Excel Academy will serve 440 students. Design of the new school includes 20 classrooms - two classrooms each for grades K-8; a dedicated middle school science room and one extra middle school classroom; a library with attached computer lab; art room; special education; cafeteria with kitchen; and a gymnasium with a stage that will also serve as a music classroom.

The team is using tilt-up concrete construction to meet a tight budget and a demanding schedule.

"SlaterPaull chose to use the moldable aspects of ready-mix concrete rather than cover it up with typical cast-in products, thus pushing the envelope on creative tilt-up design," said Jim MacKinnon, manager of project development for Saunders Tilt-up Services.

"Traditional limits of panel engineering were also tested when the design team detailed trapezoidal shaped panels at the gymnasium. This alone distinguishes this project from almost all other tilt-up projects nationally," he said.

Neenan Begins Expansion of Roosevelt High School

The Weld County Re5J School District and The Neenan Co. have begun the expansion of Roosevelt High School.

The project will entail several additions to the school, including 21,000 sq ft of classroom space, a 3,696-sq-ft wrestling room and a 2,920-sq-ft locker room. Plans also include remodeling approximately 9,000 sq ft of existing space.

  • The existing media center and four classrooms will be remodeled to create a larger media center and counseling offices with a testing area.

  • Existing locker rooms at the main gym will be remodeled to create a new weight room.

  • The existing CFS room will be remodeled for a new special needs area.

  • The existing band room will be remodeled to create a new classroom.

  • The existing special needs area will be remodeled into a new classroom.

The total design and construction cost for the project is $4.1 million, part of a bond initiative passed last November.

Hyder is also working on its second project for Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, a state-of-the-art veterinarian clinic. The centerpiece of the addition/renovation will be an MRI unit and patient transport elevator to improve diagnostic capabilities.

Hyder is also completing construction on a 20,000-sq-ft tenant-improvement project for education client, Alta Colleges, at its Denver offices.

Quality will also provide services for a second building that will deal with high-security communications. The total value of the electrical portion of the contract is over $5 million.

The project is the nation's latest military command created to protect the homeland. It will include an above ground and basement facility totaling 78,000 sq ft, including a 12,000-sq-ft battle management center.
