Skyline Park Opening/Porter Adventist Expansion/Cherokee Ranch Completion

Redesigned Skyline Park Opens in Denver

Downtown Denver's revamped Skyline Park opened in late July with a celebration hosted by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, who expects the new park will help attract more people to the city's core.

Skyline Park is is a 100-ft-wide, 3.2-acre open space that parallels Arapahoe Street from Denver's 15th to 18th streets. Its original south block was constructed in 1972 and dedicated the following year. The center and north blocks were completed in 1976.

The revitalization project was sparked by major changes in the surrounding area - including the construction of the 16th Street Mall that now bisects the park - and the physical deterioration of the park itself.

Demolition work began in May 2003. Reconstruction started the following July.

The new park design is from Thomas Balsley Associates of New York City with local input and assistance from David Owen Tryba Architects. The Weitz Co. of Denver is the contractor.

Skyline Park was originally designed by Lawrence Halprin.
