Platte Valley Medical Center Taking Shape/Arvada
Center Starts Expansion Project/One Lincoln Park Gets Under
Way
Phipps Pushes Ahead
with Brighton Medical Facility
The new Platte Valley Medical Center is rising on a 50-acre
site off 144th Avenue and Interstate 76 in Brighton. Ground
was broken on the hospital last April, with topping out in
November. The project is expected to finish in June 2007.
Gerald H. Phipps is the general contractor for the replacement
hospital designed by Fentress Bradburn Architects. Watkins
Hamilton Ross is the architect-of-record.
The new 224,000-sq-ft facility will allow the Platte Valley
Medical Center to expand beyond its existing 58-bed capacity
and upgrade from a Level IV to Level III trauma center. The
three-story building will open with 76 beds and the capacity
for a 28-bed future expansion.
A 58,000-sq-ft medical office building will be attached to
the hospital by a glass-enclosed corridor. This facility will
include 31,000 sq ft of physician-leased space, oncology and
specialty clinics and business offices.
R.E. Monks Begins
Work on Dry Creek Dam
Colorado Springs-based R.E. Monks Construction LLC has begun
construction on a $15 million contract to build a water storage
dam embankment and reservoir under a joint arrangement between
the Little Thompson Water District and the Central Weld County
Water District.
The project is located just outside Berthoud in Larimer County.
Work on the overall $22 million project is scheduled to take
about a year. When finished, the reservoir will hold nearly
9,000 acre-ft of water for the customers of both districts.
Construction Under Way on Food Bank Project
Construction will begin this spring on the renovation of
Food Bank of the Rockies' 106,241-sq-ft building in Denver.
The general contractor is I2 Construction of Denver. Denver's
Ware Malcomb is providing architecture, interior architecture
design and civil engineering design services for the project,
which includes the renovation of 17,875 sq ft of office space
and 88,366 sq ft of warehouse space.
Phase I of Arvada Center Expansion Under
Way
A groundbreaking ceremony was held in March on Phase I of
the expansion of the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities.
The $6.4 million project is expected to take less than six
months to complete. Opening festivities are planned for the
center's 30th anniversary celebration on Nov. 5.
Saunders Construction is the general contractor; Fentress
Bradburn Architects is the designer.
Phase I of the expansion will include 20,000 sq ft of newly
constructed space and 18,500 sq ft of interior renovations
and improvements, including a new 200-seat, black-box theater;
performing arts shop; expansion of the ballroom from 500 to
700 seats; expanded history museum exhibit space; new storage
for exhibit and gallery collections; an expanded gift shop;
new bus drop-off area; 60 new parking spaces; and installation
of new public art.
CTL/Thompson Working on East Canon City
Prison
CTL/Thompson is providing geotechnical and environmental
consulting and construction education materials testing for
the Colorado State Penitentiary Phase II, a high-custody project
at the East Canon City Prison Complex.
The contract was awarded in 2003, but notice to proceed with
the studies was delayed until recently. The $102.8 million
project includes construction of a 948-bed building adjacent
to the existing Centennial Correctional Facility.
The firm will provide recommendations for building foundations,
floor systems, grading, utility installation, excavation and
drainage. Studies for the expansion and associated improvements
will include drilling and/or coring of about 45 test holes
to depths of approximately 100 ft.
Improv Theater Will Be Added to Westminster
Promenade
Mad Cap Theater, a newly formed improvisational comedy club,
has leased 5,100 sq ft at 10679 Westminster Blvd. in the Westminster
Promenade, a 238,000-sq-ft entertainment retail center at
Church Ranch Road and Interstate 36 in Westminster.
The theater will open in July.
Mad Cap Theater will occupy a free-standing building, currently
under construction. The general contractor for the building
is Construction Concepts in Longmont. The exterior architect
is Englewood's MCG Architecture; the interior architect is
Michael Novick of MN2 Architecture in Bailey.
Hyder Building Greenwood Athletic Club's
Pool Addition
Hyder Construction is working on the Greenwood Athletic Club's
outdoor aquatics complex in Greenwood Village. The $2 million
project includes the construction of three new pools, including
one 25-meter, six-lane lap pool; new locker rooms and an outdoor
cabana building.
With a four-month construction schedule, the project is scheduled
to be completed at the end of June.
Construction Begins on One Lincoln Park
Osborn Development Corp. broke ground in March on One Lincoln
Park, a 31-story, 186-unit luxury high-rise in downtown Denver.
Swinerton Builders is the contractor for the core-and-shell
portion of the project, designed by Denver's Buchanan Yonushewski
Group.
With half the units already sold, the groundbreaking took
place a year ahead of schedule. Completion is set for early
2008.
The luxury high-rise project - one of the city's biggest
transit-oriented developments so far - is valued at $80 to
$90 million in construction costs, with a total cost closer
to $140 million. The property is in Denver's central business
district, directly across from the 20th and Welton RTD light
rail station.
CU's LASP Dedicates $13M Expansion
The University of Colorado at Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric
and Space Physics celebrated in early March the opening of
the $13 million addition to its Space Technology Building
in the CU Research Park.
The new addition to the LASP facility was designed to provide
much-needed room for space construction projects, mission
operations and research programs. The existing 60,000-sq-ft
structure gained 45,000 sq ft for laboratories, offices and
conference rooms, including new high-bay and clean rooms for
instruments designed and built by LASP for NASA planetary
and space missions.
The new addition was designed by Denver's AR7 Hoover Desmond.
Nunn Teams with LKA on School District
Projects
Nunn Construction Inc. is working on two projects designed
by LKA Partners for the Falcon School District - the Meridian
Ranch Elementary addition and Falcon Elementary School No.
9.
The $3 million Meridian Ranch project is a 23,200-sq-ft expansion
that includes 16 new classrooms, a kitchen upgrade, playground
area, media center and more parking. The existing 32,077-sq-ft
building was completed by Nunn in 2003.
Prime subcontractors include Alyeska Painting, Central States
Roofing, El Paso Floor, El Paso Glass, Kenney Electric, King
Masonry, Ludwig Caisson Drilling, Perkey Steel, Pioneer Sand
and Vision Mechanical.
The $6 million Falcon Elementary project consists of a new
44,500-sq-ft elementary school in the Stetson Hills development
in Colorado Springs. The project is set for completion in
July.
Prime subcontractors include Alyeska Painting, Bible Electric,
Central States Roofing, Perkey Steel, Pioneer Sand, Ryan Glass,
Salina Planing Mill, Tri-City Drywall and Vision Mechanical.
Construction Finished on Inter-Global Exhibitions
Space
Ware Malcomb and general contractor Murray & Stafford
finished design and construction of a project for Inter-Global
Exhibitions Inc. at 8674 Concord Center Dr. in Douglas County.
Ware Malcomb provided interior architectural design services
for the new space, which includes 4,200 sq ft of offices and
a 7,800-sq-ft warehouse. Highlights include the use of IGE's
brand colors; a 15-ft wall with a large-scale, colored graphic
of the company's logo in the entrance; and, also in the entry,
a large, curved wall painted a muted pumpkin color as an accent.
Warm, multi-color slate tones were used in the reception area
to add to the overall appeal of the space.
The new facility also features a large, bright and open area
that IGE will use as a graphic production room.
Stresscon Continues Work on Westminster
Shopping Center
Mark Young Construction Inc. in Denver selected Stresscon
Corp.'s Denver Metro Division as part of the project team
for Buildings L and M at the Shops at Walnut Creek in Westminster.
The buildings will house a PetsMart and Golf Galaxy Store
at the shopping center, which has been under phased construction
for more than a year.
Red Development of Kansas City, Mo. is the owner of the project,
designed by Klover Architects Inc. of Overland Park, Kan.
Page McNaghten of Fairway, Kan. provided the structural engineering.
The Building L and M phase features the use of Stresscon's
precast/prestressed concrete products - double tee floor panels,
beams and 8-in.-thick Styrocore (insulated) wall panels, manufactured
using thin brick on the exterior surface.
KB Home Announces First Community in Colorado
Springs
KB Home will open its first community in Colorado Springs
this summer - Bluffs at Springs Creek, located northeast of
the intersection of South Circle Drive and Hancock Expressway.
It will offer 86 two-story townhomes with brick and stone
exteriors, 1,400 to 1,800 sq ft of living space, three bedrooms,
two-and-a-half bathrooms and alley-loaded, attached two-car
garages.
Homes will include 12-ft ceilings in the living rooms and
covered balconies adjacent to living rooms or kitchens. All
of the homes will be built with energy-efficient materials
and come with a 10-year limited warranty.
Loggers Lane Finished in Steamboat Springs
Drahota Inc. completed construction of Loggers Lane in Steamboat
Springs.
The project, located on the west side of town near U.S. Highway
40 and Elk River Road, consisted of two commercial buildings
totaling 24,000 sq ft.
Owned by Loggers Lane Commercial Center LLC, the facility
was designed by Jakes Drafting Services in Steamboat Springs.
Salida Hospital Breaks Ground
Construction began in April on Heart of the Rockies Regional
Medical Center, a $20 million replacement hospital in Salida.
Haselden Construction in Denver and Diesslin Structures Inc.
of Salida are building the two-story, 85,000-sq-ft hospital,
located just outside of town. With an 18-month construction
schedule, the new facility will be complete in late fall 2007.
The new medical center was designed by Denver's Davis Partnership.
Bent Fork Grill Completed at Centerra
Construction was completed earlier this year on the Bent
Fork Grill at the Shops at Centerra in Loveland. A popular
restaurant in Aurora, this is the second location to open
in Colorado; it's owned by 33 and a Third.
Work on the restaurant's 1,500-sq-ft interior - designed
by Oglesby Sherman Design - began last November. The general
contractor was Drahota.
'Barn' Raising Begins at Banning Lewis
Ranch
The design-build team of SlaterPaull Architects and Golden
Triangle Construction has begun construction on the new 59,222-sq-ft
Banning Lewis Ranch Academy in Colorado Springs.
The $8.1 million school will open by the middle of August
- 11 months from design start to construction completion.
Major subcontractors on the project include Colorado Springs
Fire Protection, PSI, Fire Defense Inc., Zastrow Plumbing
Services and KPS Electric.
Drahota Begins Work on Projects in Johnstown,
Estes Park
Drahota began work last month on the Bank of Colorado at
Everitt MacMillan Development's 2534 project, a four-story,
49,552-sq-ft office building in Johnstown that will house
the bank, LBN Insurance Agency, Burns Marketing and other
tenants.
The project was designed by Vaught Frye Architects in Fort
Collins. Completion is set for early 2007.
The general contractor has also started construction in Estes
Park of Vista Ridge Phase 4, designed by Aller-Lingle Architects
PC of Fort Collins. The final phase of the development, it
consists of the construction of 20 affordable and market rate
units totaling 29,425 sq ft.
Completion is scheduled for winter 2006.
