White Finishes Third Douglas County Project/MorningStar Applewood Begins in March
White Finishes Third Project of 2006 for Douglas County
White Construction Group completed work late last year on
the $4.4 million Douglas County Human Services Building in
Castle Rock. The project involved the construction of a two-story,
31,650-sq-ft building with a concrete masonry unit and rhyolite-and-stone
exterior, standing-seam roofing, aluminum storefront entrances
and storefront windows.
Project team members included Pahl Architecture of Denver
and Douglas County Leasing Trust 2005.
The building was the third municipal project White completed
for Douglas County in 2006. The others were the Evidence Technology
and Heated Storage buildings, also in Castle Rock. The contractor
is working now on the Douglas County Southeast Road and Bridge
facility in Larkspur.
Dcb Begins Construction on Marty Farms Freight Facility
Construction began in December on a 170,000-sq-ft, two-story
office, cross dock and distribution/maintenance facility at
the Marty Farms Industrial Park in Commerce City.
Owned by Setzer Properties Commerce City LLC, the project
is scheduled to finish in November. When completed, the 72-acre
site will feature 246 doors for expanded freight operations,
making it one of the largest freight terminal projects in
Colorado.
Denver's dcb Construction Co. Inc. is the general contractor
for the facility, which will be leased by FedEx Freight, a
subsidiary of FedEx Corp. It will be FedEx Freight's second
largest distribution center in the United States.
Construction Under Way at Lauth's Newest Business Park
Construction is under way at Aurora Commerce Center, the
latest master-planned business park by Lauth Property Group.
The first building under construction at ACC is Building C,
a 406,959-sq-ft speculative industrial building that can accommodate
a variety of business operations, including warehouse, manufacturing
or distribution. Building C includes a 32-ft clear height,
34 trailer parking spaces, cross-dock configurations, 71 dock
doors and an ESFR sprinkler system. It is divisible into 50,000
sq ft units.
Construction on Building C is set to be completed this spring.
Adjacent to E-470 and Interstate 70, the 162-acre business
park offers customized sites for build-to-suits and land sales
for facilities ranging in size from 30,000 to 500,000 sq ft.
Lakewood to Get $23.5 Million Assisted-Living Community
Construction will begin in March on MorningStar Applewood,
a $23.5 million, 109-unit assisted-living community in Lakewood
by Denver-based developer MacKenzie House.
The 87,110-sq-ft facility, set to open in June 2008, will
consist of 85 one- and two-bedroom apartments, including a
special high-acuity neighborhood. Adjacent to the main building,
the project will provide a 24-apartment, "memory care"
residential cottage designed to meet the needs of people with
Alzheimer's in an intimate and family-oriented setting.
Restoration of Manzanola Train Depot Under Way
A $1 million restoration and renovation is under way for
the Manzanola Train Depot, a 1913 facility in Otero County
that was once the gateway for passengers traveling to and
from the Arkansas Valley.
The building was built to replace an older, first-generation
depot and is an intact example of the Atchison, Topeka and
Santa Fe Railroad Co.'s combination passenger and freight
depots. It features solid brick construction, functional convenience
and Mission Revival-inspired styling.
The building will house the Manzanola police station, town
hall, senior center and a new museum.
White Construction Group is the general contractor for the
project, expected to finish by April. The architect is Marc
Diament Architecture in Denver.
CU-Boulder Names Business School in Honor of Koelbels
The University of Colorado at Boulder's newly expanded and
renovated building for CU-Boulder's school of business will
be named for the Koelbel family, leaders in Colorado real
estate development, construction and sales.
The building will be known as Koelbel Hall in honor of Walter
and Gene Koelbel and their family, including their son, Walter
"Buz" Koelbel Jr. and his wife, Sherri. The senior
Koelbel is founder of Koelbel and Co.; Buz Koelbel has served
as its president for the last 20 years.
Koelbel Hall, which will house the Leeds School of Business
classrooms, research facilities and faculty and staff office,
is in the midst of a $38 million expansion and renovation.
The Koelbel family has committed $4 million.
Pinkard Construction Co. is the general contractor for the
project. The architects are Davis Partnership in Denver and
ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge Inc. of Cambridge, Mass.
Engineers include Martin/Martin., Shaffer-Baucom Engineering
& Consulting, Hefferan Partnership Inc., Sparling Inc.
and Thomas Ricca Associates.
Fletcher Garden Apartments Renovated, Rededicated
After a one-year, $2.3 million renovation, Aurora's 93-unit
Fletcher Garden senior apartments in was rededicated in early
December.
Originally opened in December 1978, the Aurora Housing Authority
property was refreshed through interior, exterior and system
renovations.
Parikh Stevens Architects provided design expertise for the
renovation.
Ground Broken on Aspen Lodge Recreation Center in Broomfield
W.E. O'Neil Construction Co. has begun work on Del Webb Development/Pulte
Homes' $12 million Aspen Lodge Recreation Center at the Anthem
Active Adult Community in Broomfield.
Designed by DTJ Design of Boulder, the 32,965-sq-ft facility
will include indoor/outdoor pools; a whirlpool; bocce ball
and shuffleboard courts; an indoor running track; aerobics,
fitness and weight multi-use areas; locker rooms; a learning
center; and a pottery/kiln room.
The center - expected to open by the end of next summer -
is being built at the south end of a 60-acre open space park
overlooking a pond to the west. It will feature a three-level,
steel-column structure with steel studs finished with wood,
glass and stone accents, as well as a two-story vestibule/entry
with a porte cochere.
Cherry Creek Opens New Special Learning Center
The Cherry Creek School District's Joliet Learning Center
- designed by Denver's Hutton Ford Architects and built by
JHL Constructors - opened in December in Aurora.
JHL Constructors was the general contractor.
The center, which provides transitional educational opportunities
for students with behavioral and emotional problems, was designed
to create a sense of calm. It features classrooms grouped
in three separate, one-story wings to cut congestion and simplify
wayfinding. Each space is also 100 percent daylighted, minimizing
the use of electric light and connecting the students with
the outdoors.
Pinkard Construction Begins Renovation of Johnson Center
Pinkard Construction Co. has started on an interior renovation
for Christian Living Communities' adult day care program at
The Johnson Center in Centennial.
The 4,000-sq-ft renovation project - designed by William Brummett
Architects - will transform office space into a senior day
care facility for 18 guests. The work will create a new serving
kitchen and a great room that features living, dining and
activity space.
Finishes and amenities will include French doors, a fireplace
and custom casework.
Pinkard is also constructing a 375-sq-ft, east-side deck addition,
new residential-style patio swing doors leading to the deck
and new restroom facilities.
B&V Completes Projects in Aurora and Littleton
Brighton-based Bleeker & Vigesaa LLC completed construction
last year on Apex Dermatology Clinic and Lowry Foot and Ankle
Specialists in Aurora and Tres Jolie Tea Lounge in Littleton.
Construction began in July on the Apex project and was finished
within five weeks.
Valued at $140,000, the facility features a spa-like environment
designed by Bothwell Davis George Architects Inc.
The new 900-sq-ft Lowry Foot and Ankle Specialists includes
a waiting room and receptionist area, two offices and two
exam rooms with open ceilings and green walls.
The project was designed by Friday Design Architects.
The Tres Jolie Tea Lounge, a 1,700-sq-ft boutique in Littleton's
old downtown, took the place of a general store that had served
the area for more than 100 years. The historic renovation,
which called for some custom-designed features that required
special care in fabrication and installation, was designed
by Michael Eltrich of In Vision Architects.
New Offices Under Way at Meadows Professional Plaza
Construction began in November on two new office buildings
at The Meadows in Castle Rock.
Meadows Professional Plaza will contain approximately 30,650
sq ft of professional and medical office space on 2.44 acres
in the Meadows subdivision. The office/condo project consists
of two 11,500-sq-ft, single-story buildings flanking an outdoor
plaza surrounded by surface parking. Each building will have
an additional 3,000-sq-ft second story on its outward end.
Project partners include Ivins Design Group, J.B. Olsen Construction
and Catlin Properties Inc.
ATLAS Center Earns LEED-Gold Certification
The ATLAS building, the University of Colorado at Boulder's
new, $31 million technology learning center, has become the
first facility in the CU system to attain a gold rating from
the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design program.
The recognition follows the renovation of CU-Boulder's University
Memorial Center, which received a silver certification earlier
in 2006. The university has another project awaiting gold
certification, the $46 million Wolf Law Building. Like the
ATLAS Center, its construction was completed last August.
The 66,000-sq-ft ATLAS Center was designed by DTJ Design and
Communications Arts. The general contractor was PCL Construction
Services. Engineers were Architectural Energy Corp., The RMH
Group and Shen Milsom & Wilke Inc. Major subcontractors
and suppliers included Performance Design, Sparling Inc.,
Walters/Storyk Design Group, Braconier Plumbing & Heating,
Ludvik Electric, Zimmerman Metals and CEAVCO.
