Construction Starts on Social Security Building/GJ Parking Structure Opens/World Arena Ice Hall Improvements Completed

170 Truckloads of Concrete Placed in One Day at Four Seasons

The 15-ft-deep mat foundation at the Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences Denver required 170 truckloads of concrete to create the base of the 45-story tower. On Jan. 19, approximately one truck every three minutes came to the site on the corner of 14th and Arapahoe streets, continuously pouring more than 6.6-million lb of concrete to create the core of what will become Denver’s fourth tallest building.

The building is scheduled for completion at the end of 2009. It will house 230 hotel rooms on the first 16 floors and 102 private residences, ranging from 964 to 6,100 sq ft, from the 18th floor up.

The project’s design team is led by Carney Architects of Jackson Hole, Wyo., with HKS Inc of Dallas as the architect-of-record. Swinerton Builders of Denver is the general contractor.

White Breaks Ground on Social Security Building

White Construction Group of Castle Rock has started construction on the new Social Security Administration Building in Pueblo.

The Pueblo SSA is expected to move from its current location in the Wells Fargo Bank Building on West 8th Street to its new office space on 3769 Parker Blvd. in the fall. The project involves the construction of a new 10,545-sq-ft office building.

The Pueblo Transit Bus Route 8 will also serve the new office.

Grand Junction’s Rood Avenue Parking Structure Opens/p>

Construction was recently completed on the 433-space Rood Avenue Parking Structure, a 150,000-sq-ft, three-story parking garage in Grand Junction.

The structure contains both open public parking spaces to support retailers, as well as spaces leased to nearby employers and property owners. The facade was designed to simulate the multiple storefronts and designed to reflect different periods of development in downtown Grand Junction during the past 100 years, both in scale and in terms of the historic style of the nearby Main Street.

GE Johnson Completes World Arena Ice Hall Improvements

Twelve years after completing the original construction, Colorado Springs-based GE Johnson Construction Co. recently completed renovations and additions to the Colorado Springs World Arena Ice Hall.
The project included renovations to the facade and interior of the building, including expanding the lobby area and installing a new stone reception desk, stone fireplace and additional seating areas; adding a skate rental and pro shop adjacent to the lobby; and four new locker rooms that include showers, a changing area and bathrooms.

The 4,000-sq-ft addition includes a vending room, coaches’ room and much-needed offices for the Ice Hall staff. The $1.2-million project began in August 2007 and was completed on Jan. 15.

Pinkard Finishes 46th Recreation Project

Pinkard Construction of Lakewood provided design-build services with Aller-Lingle Architects and Sink Combs Dethlefs to design and construct the Northside Aztlan Community Center for the city of Fort Collins.

The new 50,000-sq-ft Aztlan project tripled the size of the former facility and is expected to be a key component of the city’s proposed cultural and arts area.

Aztlan is pursuing LEED-silver certification and features an insulated concrete form system; heat-reflective roofing; maximizes the use of recycled and local materials; optimizes water conservation through low-flow plumbing fixtures; maximizes energy conservation and equipment performance; and creates daylighted spaces. Aztlan was constructed on a former landfill, which qualified it as a brownfield site.

Drahota Wraps UpFort Collins Club

Drahota Construction recently completed a 21,000-sq-ft addition and remodel for the Fort Collins Club located at 1307 E. Prospect Rd.

The addition includes a new cardio room, kids; workout area, a climbing wall, new weight room, a spin-class room and, separate from the club, a new spa and hair salon.

The original building was built in 1984 and throughout the years, Drahota has completed several renovations for the club. Plans for the new addition began two years ago when owner Todd Heenan realized that in order to continue to be a leader in the area, he would need to make some changes to the facility, unique to Northern Colorado and the growing population.

JE Dunn Completes Regis Renovation

JE Dunn Construction, with offices in Denver and Colorado Springs, recently completed the interior renovation of the Science Building on the campus of Regis University.

Designed by Bennett, Wagner and Grody Architects of Denver, the $7.7-million project included the complete interior renovation of the three-story building to create new facilities for animal research, neurology, histology and physics on the first floor; biology on the second floor; and chemistry on the third floor.

The work included mechanical, plumbing and electrical system upgrades, casework and the installation of new laboratory equipment. The project also involved remodeling the lecture hall attached to the second floor and the addition of a new stair tower and elevator. Work was completed just before the start of the university’s spring semester.
