Aspen Middle School Earns LEED NC Gold
Aspen Middle School is the first K-12 public school in Colorado to earn LEED for New Construction Gold certification.
The 111,500-sq-ft, $22-million project consisted of a classroom expansion to the existing elementary school, improvements to the school district theater, and a replacement middle school with a playground and site alterations to improve pedestrian and traffic flow.
Key sustainable strategies for the school were daylighting, high-efficiency electric lighting, multi-story form and high-performance glazing. Other sustainable features of note include reflective roofing, waterless urinals, low-maintenance concrete floors and linoleum.
Drahota Puts the Finishing Touches On the Villages at Steamboat Springs
Drahota Construction of Fort Collins has completed construction on the $38-million expansion of the Villages at Steamboat Springs, located near Pine Grove and Mount Werner roads in the area’s ski resort.
Construction on the 200,000-sq-ft project began in 2006, headed by Drahota and Portland, Ore.-based design team Ankrom Moisan.
The expansion of the multifamily timeshare features 142 residential units in 4 three-story buildings, underground parking, an outdoor pool and barbeque area, two outdoor spas and one enclosed spa, a sport court and a laundry and maintenance building, as well as the renovation of the existing reception building and clubhouse.
The Villages at Steamboat Springs is part of the Trendwest Resort brand, a subsidiary of Wyndham Vacation Ownership, the world’s largest vacation ownership company.
Bethke Elementary Named First Gold Medal School Project in U.S.
Bethke Elementary in Timnath has become the first school in the country to earn the Gold Medal Building of America Award under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.
Some of the Bethke’s sustainable features include daylighting, a highly efficient building envelope; state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems; operable windows for controlled occupant comfort; as well as the use of renewable energy resources.
Except for the gymnasium, the school is fully air conditioned through the energy-efficient use of indirect evaporative cooling.
Bethke’s design stems from a prototype designed by RB+B Architects of Fort Collins and first implemented in the school district in 2002 at Zach Elementary.
