Firms Compete for 'Canstruction' Honors/Spacecon
Acquires Sprehe Assets/White Construction Group Relocates

in Show at the Society for Administration's 2006 "canstruction"
design-build competition and food drive in January.
'Chuck Wagon' Hauls in Top Canstruction
Honors
The team of Anderson Mason Dale Architects, KL&A Inc.
and Swinerton Builders took top honors at the 2006 "canstruction"
design-build competition, held in January at the National
Western Stock Show. Their entry, "The Chuck Wagon,"
was named Juror's Favorite-Best in Show.
Other winners of this year's competition were:
- Best Use of Labels - The RMH Group Inc. for "Harvesting
for the Hungry," re-creation of a barn and silo;
- Best Meal - Intergroup Architects Inc. for "Spaghetti
Western," stagecoach structure;
- Structural Integrity - 4240 Architecture Inc. for "Million
Dollar Cowboy Bar Sign," a cowboy with a hat on a bucking
horse.
Honorable mentions were presented to Monroe & Newell
Engineers Inc. for "Make Hunger History: One CAN at a
Time," an oversized can of chili; and Barker Rinker Seacat
Architecture for its can-made KYGO radio station logo.
The competition, which raises food for and awareness of the
Food Bank of the Rockies, was sponsored by the Denver Chapter
of the Society for Design Administration.
Alliance and McKee Medical Center Receive
Safety Awards
Loveland's Alliance Construction Solutions and the employees
and staff of McKee Medical Center were recognized with a Commendable
Safety Performance Award from Liberty Mutual Group and the
Banner Owner Controlled Insurance Program Safety Award from
Ashton Tiffany LLC.
The honors were given for the contractor's work on the McKee
Medical Center Legacy Project in Loveland. The project's lost
workday averages were 0.86 per hundred employees, one-third
of the national average.
Spacecon Acquires Sprehe Interior Construction's
Assets
Spacecon Specialty Contractors LLC's previously announced
acquisition of assets from Sprehe Interior Construction Inc.
was completed on Dec. 31.
As of Jan. 1, all of Sprehe's construction management employees
- including field operations managers, project managers, estimators,
safety managers, superintendents, foremen and warehouse personnel,
together with most of Sprehe's non-construction support staff
- became part of the Spacecon organization.
Spacecon Specialty Contractors is a newly formed subsidiary
of Irex Corp., one of the nation's 50 largest specialty contracting
organizations. Irex currently owns a controlling interest
in 10 contracting subsidiaries doing work throughout the United
States and Canada.
Paul Sprehe, Sprehe Interior Contractors' owner and president,
is retiring from the interior construction business. Spacecon
is based in Colorado Springs, with a division office in Denver.
Coover-Clark Selected for Fish and Wildlife
Service Contract
Denver's Coover-Clark & Associates has signed a five-year
Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity contract with the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to provide multidiscipline
architecture and engineering design services for Region 6.
To prepare for the project, the firm has assembled a team
of project personnel and subconsultant-teaming partners with
direct experience working for the USFWS on similar Region
6 contracts. They include Anderson Mason Dale, J.F. Sato,
Robert Peccia and Associates, The RMH Group, EDAW Inc. and
Yeh & Associates.
White Construction Relocates to New HQ
White Construction Group has relocated to its new headquarters
at 18 S. Wilcox St., Suite 100, Castle Rock, 80104.The new
building was completed in time for the company's 20th anniversary.

MKK Consulting Launches New Identity
MKK Consulting Engineers Inc. rolled out a new corporate
identity meant to reflect an energy and corporate focus that
builds on the strengths of the firm's 45-year history. The
new logo symbolizes the firm's renewed commitment to its founding
principles and captures the essence of the firm's vision and
direction.
The firm's new graphics package was created by Campo Design
of Denver. It refreshes MKK's visual identity with a new logo,
color palette and redesign of corporate communication documents.
Olsson Associates Lands Contract With GSA
Olsson Associates has been added to the General Services
Administration schedule, making it easier for the firm to
provide services to the federal government.
OA's contract services are environmental planning services
and documentation, environmental compliance services, waste
management services and software and remediation services
These listings on the GSA schedule are significant because
agencies can now directly acquire the firm's environmental
services without lengthy proposal and pricing procedures.
A&P Achieves Major Safety Milestone
Adolfson & Peterson Construction of Aurora surpassed
a major milestone in the construction industry - one million
consecutive man hours worked with no lost-time accidents.
The million-hour mark was hit on Dec. 16, the second time
in five years that A&P has accomplished this goal.
Thissen Lands Three Northern Colorado Projects
Thissen Construction Corp. of Greeley is remodeling the New
Frontier Bank in Longmont, set to open on July 1.
Thissen was also selected for two other projects in northern
Colorado:
- The Educational Services Building - Chiller Replacement
project for Weld County School District #6, which includes
replacing the current non-functioning cooling system for
the district offices in Greeley; and
- A design-build contract for the new HDTV transmission
tower control building to be built near Frederick. The control
building will provide conditioned space for housing for
the transmitters for a new 1,180-ft-tall transmission tower.
Keller Homes Lands Gold at NAHB Gathering
Keller Homes in Colorado Springs was awarded several gold
awards in January at the National Association of Home Builders
conference in Orlando.
The company received Best Detached Home ($400,000 - $650,000)
and Detached Community of the Year for La Bellezza at Peregrine.
Other gold and silver awards Keller received for the community
included Best Interior Merchandising of a Model ($650,000
- $1 Million); Best Design Center and Best Single Detached
Home ($400,000 - $650,000); and Best Landscape Design for
a Detached Project.
Alliance Awarded Thompson District Renovation
Projects
Alliance Construction Solutions was selected by the Thompson
School District for renovation and addition projects at Centennial
and Winona elementary schools in Loveland.
The projects will provide more classrooms, gymnasiums, administration
and commons areas to the campuses, both more than 30 years
old. The work includes the addition of approximately 20,000
sq ft with 12 new classrooms, plus core upgrades to meet elementary
education specifications.
The total estimated budget for both schools is $7.98 million.
