RTA Architects Expands into Pueblo/Concrete Works Wins National Honors/M+O+A Designing Schools in Wyoming and Jeffco

RTA Architects opened an office in downtown Pueblo this spring, a move designed to further solidify the firm's relationships with clients in the area and design-build partner H.W. Houston Construction Co.

RTA Solidifies Its Pueblo-Area Market with Office Expansion

Colorado Springs-based RTA Architects has opened an office in downtown Pueblo.

The expansion was designed to strengthen the firm's relationships with clients in the area. RTA also has a design-build partnership with H.W. Houston Construction Co. of Pueblo called Total Project Solutions or TPS3. The new office location - 625 S. Union Ave. - is three blocks from H.W. Houston's headquarters.

The Pueblo office team includes Richard Cherry, AIA, project manager; Matthew Burnette and Olha Schmidt, architectural interns; Laurie Bussey, draftsperson and project assistant; and Susan TenBrink, project manager and designer.


Pahl-Pahl-Pahl Re-appointed to Hilton Architects Roundtable

Pahl-Pahl-Pahl was appointed to the Hilton Architects Roundtable for 2006 - the third time the firm has been selected for the group.

The roundtable is a select group of 12 architectural firms experienced in the development of Hilton-branded projects. Participation is by invitation only and based on successful completion of Hilton projects and positive feedback from Hilton franchisees.


LewisGraham Art Consultants Opens in Denver on Broadway

Barbara Lewis and Liz Graham have formed LewisGraham Art Consultants, an independent consultant to corporations seeking to enhance their environments with art.

Lewis and Graham, formerly of McGrath & Braun, have more than 20 years of experience in corporate art procurement. LewisGraham places art in all media, including painting, sculpture, prints, photography, drawings, fiber, fine crafts, artifacts, mixed media, etc.


FCI Constructors Selected for Fitzsimons Building 500

FCI Constructors' Longmont office was selected as the construction manager/general contractor for Fitzsimons Administration (Building 500) Phase III Remodel.

The work includes the complete renovation of 26,000 sq ft of the sixth floor.

The $5.1 million project - designed by Denver's Bennett Wagner and Grody Architects - will also include remodels of smaller areas on the eighth and ground floors and work as needed on other floors of the historic building, originally built in the early 1940s.


MW GOLDEN CONSTRUCTORS was awarded a project for the Lodge Casino in Black Hawk.

The work involves the relocation and construction of a trash holding and compactor room in anticipation of a future expansion to the casino. In addition to generating more space, trash removal operations for several casinos will be combined for a significant cost savings.

The design of the $300,000 project was provided by River Studio Architects. Contract administration is being provided by ARC Inc. in Boulder.

MW GOLDEN was also selected to handle the $65,000 remodel of Castle Rock Fire Station No. 151, a facility the contractor built in 1998-99. The project involves modifications to the reception and clerical areas, lobby and files/break room space, as well as a new office for the division chief and new restrooms near the equipment bays.


Jordy/Carter Lands Lab Furnishings Contract for Barbara Davis Center

Jordy/Carter Furnishings Laboratory Division was awarded the laboratory furnishings contract from J.E. Dunn Construction Co. for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes at the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora.

The contract totals just under $1 million and includes the furnishing and installation of casework, fume hoods, service fittings and fixtures, laboratory equipment and the controlled environment room.


Ken Caryl Manor House Now Home to NHBA

National Home Buyers Assistance moved its national headquarters to the historic Manor House in the Ken Caryl Valley in March. The 5.7-acre Manor House property was purchased by an investment group represented by NHBA founder and CEO Michael Shinn.

Shinn will be the lead developer on planned improvements to the Manor House property, including landscaping. The goal is to position the facility - already a popular special events space - to compete as a world-class events center. Upon completion, the property will be submitted for National Historic Landmark designation.


Alberta Plans Cornerstar Development in Aurora

Alberta Development Partners LLC has acquired a 158-acre site at the southwest corner of Parker Road and Arapahoe Road in Aurora to develop Cornerstar, a 750,000-sq-ft regional shopping destination.

Cornerstar will be home to a gourmet market, large format retailers, small shops and several restaurants. Alberta is also considering the inclusion of more than 325 multifamily residences as a part of the project.

The design team for the project includes Communication Arts and SEM Architects.

Construction will begin in the fall, with the opening scheduled for spring 2008.


ASCG Wins Contract for Colorado Springs Utility Project

ASCG Inc. - formerly McLaughlin Water Engineers - was awarded the contract for engineering services for the Eastern Non-Potable Waterline Replacement Project for Colorado Springs Utilities.


Riviera Offering New Gas Service Installation for Home builders

Riviera Electric has extended its capabilities in underground utility services with the addition of gas installation for new construction in the Colorado Springs area.

New gas service installation includes gas services, rock and frost preparation, joint trench service for electrical and gas installation (once approved by CSU), and phone/CATV duct installation.

Riviera crews are PE-fusion certified and hold Department of Transportation operator qualifications.


Concrete Works Wins Three National Awards

Lafayette-based Concrete Works of Colorado Inc. was honored earlier this year with three national awards for the Broadway Street and Bridge Reconstruction Project in Boulder.

The awards received for the Broadway project were:

  • The American Public Works Association's Project of the Year Award for Transportation Projects - $2 to $10 Million;
  • The American Concrete Pavement Association's Award for Excellence in the category of Traffic Management; and
  • ACPA's Award for Excellence in the Municipal Streets & Intersections - Under 30,000 sq yds category.

M+O+A Awarded School Projects in Jeffco and Wyoming

M+O+A Architectural Partnership has been awarded the design of a new elementary school and renovations to Rawlins Middle School for the Carbon County School District in Rawlins, Wyo.

The new elementary school will consist of two buildings - one for K-2 students and the other for grades three through five. It will include associated site development, playgrounds and parking.

The middle school project will consist of mechanical, electrical and technology upgrades, as well as some minor interior remodeling for ADA upgrades, space utilization and increased daylighting for energy conservation.

The firm also won a design process and idea competition by Jefferson County School District to design the new Bear Creek High School campus.

M+O+A and team partner RTA Architects have begun the design process for the new high school, which will replace the current aging and outdated Bear Creek High. It will accommodate 2,000 students in approximately 250,000 sq ft of new and refurbished space. The estimated construction budget for the project is $31.2 million.

The new Bear Creek High will be located immediately to the west of the existing school on the site of the current Bear Creek Elementary, incorporating part of the elementary school as a component of the new design.

Construction is scheduled to start in summer 2007, following completion of the new Bear Creek K-8 school, also designed by M+O+A Architectural Partnership.


Kumar Selected for Work at Rapids Stadium Site

Kumar and Associates Inc. has been retained by Kroenke Sports Enterprises through the Romani Group/ICON Venue Group to perform the construction observation and materials testing services for the new Colorado Rapids soccer stadium and Prairie Gateway development.

The 1,000-acre project is under construction just north of Interstate 70 at 56th Avenue and Quebec Street in Commerce City.

Kumar's work will include the observation and testing of earthwork for the excavation and backfill of the stadium bowl and walls, structural concrete testing for the foundations, walls, bleachers and concourses, reinforcing steel observation, structural masonry observation and testing, as well as the inspection of the structural steel erection.

In addition to field observations of structural steel erection, the firm is also providing fabrication shop inspection in various structural steel fabrication facilities in Colorado, Arkansas and Nebraska.


Denver Firm Will Continue Work at UCDHSC

Denver's studioINSITE was selected by the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center to provide urban design, landscape architecture and construction administration services along the Fitzsimons campus Colfax Frontage - considered the "front door" to the 217-acre medical, research and academic center.

The development of design will focus on the Colfax frontage between Quentin and Ursula streets and 17th Avenue between Peoria and Quentin streets.


Himmelman Wins Breckenridge Center, Announces Other Projects

Himmelman Construction has been named the general contractor for the new Breckenridge Building Center in Breckenridge.

The 30,000-sq-ft facility will serve as the headquarters, material storage facility and retail center for Breckenridge Building Center. The project is expected to cost approximately $4 million.

The firm was also recently awarded the South Trail Maintenance Facility in Adams County, an 8,000-sq-ft facility that will serve as the maintenance facility for the Adams County South Park Trail. The company is teamed with Lewis Himes to value-engineer the $800,000 project.

Himmelman is also working with Zeiler Penock on the design-build of the full-service 4-Season Carwash in Aurora.The two firms have worked together to produce a high-end automated tunnel car wash in Lakewood. The 5-Minute Carwash includes extensive artwork features and waving water-like steel canopies that surround the building.
