Humphries Poli Wins AIA-HUD Award/Robinson
Brick Sold/CH2M Hill Opens in Shanghai
The American Institute of Architects
and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development named
Denver's Humphries Poli Architects the winner of the 2006
Community by Design Award for the Blake Street Flats affordable
housing project in Denver.
DOT Architects to Lead Justice Center Team
Denver's David Owen Tryba Architects, in association with
DMJM Design and Mundus Bishop Design, was selected as the
master urban design architect for the $378 million Denver
Justice Center, approved by Denver voters in May.
The team will provide a unifying vision for the downtown
Justice Center, including a courthouse, detention facility
and parking garage.
As the master urban design architect, David Owen Tryba/DMJM
and Mundus Bishop Design will lead a team of experts that
includes Jeremy Klop of Fehr and Peers and Mace Pemberton
of MNA Engineering.
They will study the Justice Center site and conduct community
listening sessions to provide a detailed description of how
the courthouse, detention facility and parking garage will
relate to each other and how the public spaces will function
and connect to the adjacent neighborhoods and districtHumphries
Poli Architects Wins AIA-HUD Award
Denver's Humphries Poli Architects PC was the recipient of
one of three national AIA-HUD Housing and Community Design
Awards for 2006.
Winner of the Community by Design Award for its Blake Street
Flats affordable housing project, the firm was honored during
the American Institute of Architects 2006 National Convention
and Design Expo in Los Angeles.
The award is given jointly by the AIA Center for Communities
by Design, AIA Housing and Custom Residential Knowledge Community
and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Located just a mile north of downtown Denver, Blake Street
Flats is part of the third phase of DHA's Curtis Park Hope
VI Redevelopment. The project was honored because it fulfills
the AIA-HUD award's requirement of one that "plays an
exemplary role in helping to revitalize the community in which
it is located by enhancing the community's physical fabric,"
through both the design process and the structure itself.
AIA Northern Nevada Honors OZ for Squaw
Valley Resort
Colorado-based OZ Architecture, along with Raymond Letkemand
Architects Inc., was awarded a Merit Award from the Northern
Nevada Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for
its work on the Village at Squaw Valley, a self-contained
ski resort located at the base of Squaw Valley, Calif.
OZ revitalized the village by designing a mixed-used pedestrian
resort filled with welcoming plazas, resting places, restaurants,
cafes, shops and galleries.
Denver's Robinson Brick Sold to Austrian
Firm
Denver-based Robinson Brick Co. was sold to Austrian-based
Wienerberger AG through General Shale Brick Inc., its U.S.-based
subsidiary.
The acquisition price totaled $88 million, plus net working
capital, as of the closing date. Net working capital at year-end
2005 was approximately $28 million.
CEO Robert Jaster will continue to lead RBC, founded in 1880.
Green Manning & Bunch Ltd. served as RBC's financial
adviser in the transaction, with Jacobs Chase Frick Kleinkopf
& Kelley serving as legal counsel.
Sellards and Grigg Merge with SEH
Sellards and Grigg Inc. in Lakewood merged with Short Elliott
Hendrickson Inc., a professional consulting services firm,
effective July 1.
The S&G office will remain open, becoming one of SEH's
seven western region offices located throughout Colorado and
Wyoming.
Jacobs Lands CDOC Program Management for
Canon City Prison
Jacobs Engineering Group in Denver received a contract from
the Colorado Department of Corrections to provide program
management services for a new $100 million high-custody correctional
facility in Canon City.
The project will add 948 beds adjacent to the Centennial
Correctional Facility at the East Canon City prison complex.
New construction includes inmate housing, support facilities
and significant site/utilities infrastructure.
Tile Companies Merge, Open New Showroom
Summit Brick & Tile Co. and Lakewood Brick & Tile
Co. combined this summer to create Summit Lakewood Brick Sales,
opening a new showroom in Lakewood.
General Sales Manager Mike Kelty will lead and operate the
new sales division.
The company's new 6,000-sq-ft showroom displays the Summit
and Lakewood product lines along with 3,500 sq ft of clay
pavers from four manufacturers. The showroom offers a large
selection of products designed to be both residentially and
commercially friendly.
McGraw-Hill Construction Launches New Magazine
on 'Green' Design
McGraw-Hill Construction has launched a new magazine dedicated
to the growing market for environmentally-responsible "green"
buildings.
GreenSource, The Magazine of Sustainable Design presents
news, features, case studies of important projects and green
product information to more than 40,000 architects, interior
designers, building owners and members of the U.S. Green Building
Council.
McGraw-Hill Construction's editors have collaborated on GreenSource
and the related Web site with editors from BuildingGreen Inc.,
an information company that provides accurate, unbiased green
product information and policy analysis for building industry
professionals and policymakers.
GreenSource will be published twice in 2006. The premiere
issue debuted at the AIA national convention in Las Angeles.
The second issue will publish before the GreenBuild Conference
& Expo, set for Nov. 15-17 in Denver. McGraw-Hill Construction
will also produce the conference and expo guide.
Additional issues of GreenSource are expected to be added
in 2007.
DPS Picks klipp, Harrold Massop Associates
to Design New K-8
The Denver Public Schools' board of education selected Denver's
klipp, in association with Harold Massop Associates Architects
PC, to design a new K-8 school for Stapleton, near 26th and
Iola Street.
As part of the overall Stapleton development plan, the school
will be the third of four middle schools for the emerging
community located on the former airport site. The plan also
calls for two new K-5 elementary schools and two new high
schools.
Construction for the new K-8 school is scheduled to begin
next spring, with completion in fall 2008.
New Parking Consulting Firm Debuts in Denver
Paul Mack, PE, and Melissa Baughman have founded Parking
Consultants LLC.
Based in Denver, the firm provides consulting services throughout
the Rocky Mountain region. The firm primarily focuses on the
functional and operational aspects of parking design and management.

MKK Launches Revamped Web Site in New Branding
Effort
MKK Consulting Engineers Inc. in Greenwood Village has unveiled
a new look for its corporate Web site at www.mkkeng.com.
The recent launch is meant to continue the momentum begun
with the release of a new corporate logo and brand identity
earlier this year. It is the next step in the company's course
in reaffirming its 45-year heritage.
W.E. O'Neil Construction Relocates to New
Office
W.E. O'Neil Construction Co. of Colorado moved into a new
regional facility in Denver last month.
The new office is located at 229 Vallejo St., just southwest
of the intersection of 6th Avenue Parkway and I-25. The company
renovated an older 13,000-sq-ft warehouse to accommodate its
new regional facility.
CH2M Hill Opens Shanghai HQ for Northern
Asia
The board of Denver-based CH2M Hill held a dedication ceremony
in June to recognize the opening of its new Shanghai office,
the firm's Northern Asia regional headquarters.
The firm, which has been working in the China for more than
25 years, has more than 330 staff in five offices.
CH2M Hill is one of only a few North American-based engineering
construction firms licensed to perform the construction of
industrial and public works projects in China. The firm received
the license from the Shanghai Ministry of Construction in
January.
Commercial Equity Changes Name to Modo Developers
Commercial Equity LLC, a Colorado-based developer specializing
in the renovation of urban buildings into modern condos, has
changed the company name to Modo Developers Inc.
"Modo" - short for "modern downtown"
- was chosen to reflect the company's focus on buying existing
urban buildings and renovating them into modern neighborhood
"gems," said Todd McWhirter, managing partner and
company co-founder.
A&P Named Business of the Year by Aurora
Chamber of Commerce
Adolfson & Peterson Construction was named as the Aurora
Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year.
The award is presented for outstanding service during 2005
to a chamber business member that has contributed to the community
and quality of life through its business practices, employees
and community involvement."
Trammell Crow Will Manage CDJ/CHS Project
Colorado Judicial Department and Colorado Historical So
ciety have chosen Trammell Crow Co. to provide project management
services for the design and construction of new, independent
facilities for each organization.
The judicial department asked the Urban Land Institute last
year to study the two buildings that comprise the Colorado
Judicial Heritage Center - the Colorado Judicial Building
and Colorado History Museum.
ULI determined that the buildings, located bear Denver's
Civic Center Park, do not meet the current or expected future
needs of either organization. The organization recommended
that both organizations work together to find a feasible solution.
Pending final contract negotiations, Trammell Crow will review
the recommendations from ULI and work with each organization.
The initial phase will include preparing a feasibility study
to determine the space requirements for each organization,
the estimated cost for each project and financing alternatives.
Subsequent phases will include design and construction management
services.
The proposal is based on a seven-year completion schedule.
