MAI Designs Pine Canyon Clubhouse/CH2M Hill Wins $11B Contract in South Korea

Designed by MAI Group in Englewood, the $17-million clubhouse at Pine Canyon Golf Club near Flagstaff blends with the resort’s rustic mountain atmosphere.

Upscale Arizona Clubhouse Created by Denver Architect

Englewood-based MAI Design Group completed its commission earlier this year to design the clubhouse and related buildings for the Pine Canyon Golf Club near Flagstaff.

The 38,000-sq-ft clubhouse features a stone-and-timber lodge design created to blend with the rustic mountain atmosphere of the club, which is surrounded by Ponderosa pine-filled national forest. Key project elements include the main clubhouse, interior finishes, furnishings and accessories, gatehouse and sales center.

The total cost of the project is $17 million.

The two-story clubhouse is designed as three connected buildings and features an exterior of multi-hued Telluride stone in golds, grays and browns, log siding with chinking and a slate roof with copper accents. A series of peaked roof lines prevent snow build-up, with timber trusses supporting these areas.

The project developer is Lone Tree Investments and the builder is Westpac, both of Arizona. Colorado-based Redstone was the planner.

The contractor was also selected as the construction manager/general contractor for the new Eagle County High School. The construction cost for the 186,000-sq-ft school is approximately $41.4 million.

Shawmut Design and Construction is the contractor for the $6-million project, LDa Architects is the associate architect, and Architectural Energy Corp. is the sustainability consultant. Construction began in late February. Completion is expected this fall.

CH2M Hill Hires Nearly 900, Lands South Korea Contract

Denver-based CH2M Hill hired nearly 900 professionals in first quarter of 2007 to staff a growing number of water, transportation, environmental and industrial projects worldwide.

Openings included civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and process engineers, designers, procurement staff, construction managers and technical publication staff. The largest numbers of openings are in the Southwest and the Southeast. More than 70% of first-quarter 2007 hires occurred in the United States, 86% were full-time positions and 88% were external hires.

South Korea’s Defense Ministry selected a joint venture of CH2M Hill Cos., based in Denver, and the South Korean firm Kunwon Engineering as the “preferred bidder” to be the program manager for what could be as much as an $11-billion construction contract to consolidate and relocate U.S. military forces in that country.

Ownership of the project is split between the South Korean Defense Ministry and the U.S. military.

Swinerton Builders is First Colorado GC to Go Entirely Green

Swinerton Builders Colorado is purchasing renewable energy certificates to offset 100% of the electricity used in its Arvada office and all of its jobsites.

The purchase, totaling over 1.32 million kWh of renewable energy annually, will allow Swinerton to offset CO2 emissions equal to 1.8 million lbs per year. This has the same environmental impact as not driving more than two million mi. in the average car and planting 243 acres of fully mature trees.

In partnership with Renewable Choice Energy, the contractor will obtain renewable energy credits for power sources, including wind, biomass, geothermal and small hydro. All of these power sources are Green-e Certified.

According to Renewable Choice Energy, Swinerton is the first general contractor in Colorado to become entirely green-powered.

Klipp to Design Dakota Ridge High School Expansion

Denver’s klipp will design a second addition to Dakota Ridge High School in the Jefferson County School District.

The school, originally designed by klipp in 1996, is situated on a 42-acre campus east of the Dakota Hogback—the school’s namesake—across C-470 at Bowles Avenue.

The building’s arched bow-string roof was designed to intentionally echo the slope of the Dakota Ridge land formation to the west, providing a visual connection between the existing landscape and the school.

Spaces for art, music and dining are expressed architecturally as individual elements but are easily identifiable. For example, the music room is designed to mirror the shape of a grand piano.

The first addition to the facility was completed in 1999. Construction of the second addition is expected to be complete in December 2008.
