Construction Industry Leaders Help Remodel CSU Industrial Sciences Building/ Honnen Equipment Opens Wyoming Branch

Industry Firms Help Remodel CSU Building

Colorado State University launched the renovation of its historic Industrial Sciences Building at a ceremony in April that created an unprecedented partnership between the construction industry and the university.

The building, constructed in 1883, will be completely renovated by donations from 13 area construction and mechanical contracting firms. The renovation will feature a state-of-the-art preconstruction laboratory, classrooms, lecture hall, study lounge, technology center and public spaces. Several renovated rooms will bear the names of the firms that donate to the university’s historical landmark.

Contractors contributing to the project include:  Haselden Construction, Centennial; Saunders Construction Inc., Denver; PCL, Denver; Hensel Phelps Construction, Greeley; and G.E. Johnson, Colorado Springs and Denver.

Others include: Mechanical Contractors Association, U.S. Engineering, Trautman and Shreve, Murphy Co. and Braconier Plumbing and Heating.

Concrete Frame Associates and Valley Crest Landscaping will sponsor renovation of the courtyard off the Oval.


Honnen Equipment Co.Opens New Wyoming Branch

Honnen Equipment Co. recently announced the opening of its sixth branch, this one in Rock Springs, Wyo. The new full-service, 10,000-sq-ft building has a fully stocked parts warehouse and four service bays. Two field service trucks accommodate on-the-job machine servicing. The location provides sales, rentals, parts and service to the fast-growing areas of western Wyoming.

Ohlson Lavoie Recognized as Best in Recreational Design

Denver-based Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative has won a pair of 2008 Innovative Architecture & Design awards from Recreation Management magazine.

The awards honor recreation facilities, new or remodeled, that are raising the standards of excellence in the recreation community.

OLC projects honored include the Aspen Lodge Recreation Center at Anthem Ranch in Broomfield and the Health and Fitness Center at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Mich. OLC has now won the Innovative Architecture and Design Award five times in the last three years.

Other OLC projects that received the same award in recent years were the West River Community Center in Dickinson, N.D., Laramie Community Recreation Center in Laramie, Wyo., and The Trails Recreation Center in Centennial.


Taylor Kohrs Completes Tenant Finish Services for Pharmion

Denver general contractor Taylor Kohrs recently announced the completion of interior tenant finish work on behalf of Pharmion, a pharmaceutical company in Boulder.

Construction included transforming the gray shell into 9,000 sq ft of finished office space.


Alliance Breaks Ground on Family Health Center

Alliance Construction Solutions of Loveland broke ground on the new Park Hill Family Health Center in Dahlia Square in Denver this spring.

The Park Hill Family Health Center will be part of the redevelopment of Dahlia Square, with the other portion of the property planned for residential housing. Current health center plans call for a 12,000-sq-ft, stand-alone clinic consisting of exam rooms, procedure rooms, a pharmacy, lab and offices.

Construction will be complete in November.

Hensel Phelps, Fentress Architects Win $60M Intelligence Center Contract

The design-build team of Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Greeley and Fentress Architects of Denver has been awarded a $60.6-million contract to build the National Maritime Intelligence Center in Suitland, Md.

The Naval Engineering Facilities Command in Washington, D.C. contracted the 184,000-sq-ft building expansion to accommodate 775 additional personnel. They will work in an efficient, state-of-the-art, secured environment that provides command support for missions in the Office of Naval Intelligence and its subtenants. The facility will include sensitive-information spaces, training areas and an automated data processing center, as well as an executive conference center and fitness facility.

The existing central plant will be upgraded to accommodate the expansion and about 32,000 sq ft of renovation to the existing NMIC facility will start upon completion of new building construction in 2010.


Saunders Selected as Contractor for Middle School Renovation

Saunders Construction Inc. of Centennial is revitalizing Casey Middle School in Boulder.

The school will be upgraded to an environmentally friendly, 100,000- to 110,000-sq-ft, multi-story structure. Saunders will begin the facility improvements in February 2009 so the revitalized school will be ready by the 2010-11 academic school year.

School additions and renovations include a basic studies complex, administrative offices, the cafeteria and kitchen, library, auditorium, faculty lounge and work rooms, a community room and special education/exploratory studies/physical education/building services facilities.

The school plans to obtain a LEED-gold certification.
