Brannan Building New Headquarters
After many years in the planning stage, Brannan Sand &
Gravel Co. officially broke ground on Sept. 11 for construction
of its new world headquarters. The site is east of York Street
on the south side of Highway 224 in Denver/Adams County.
Adams County commissioners, representatives from Adams County
Economic Development, the designer SEM Architects, general
contractor Calcon Constructors and other agencies that were
instrumental in planning the project were present at the ceremony.
The site is a 30-acre reclaimed gravel pit that has been in
the Brannan family for approximately 30 years. Brannan's headquarters
will be the first building on the site, and the overall plan
is to develop it into an office park within five years.
The 16,800-sq-ft building is slated for completion in the
first quarter of 2004.

650,000 sq ft of space, including corporate offices, retail

Lakewood Visitor Center Reflects Local History
OZ Architecture's design for the new Lakewood Visitor Center
bears a striking resemblance to an Art Deco movie palace.
"The streamlined Art Deco style was once common along
West Colfax, where Lakewood grew up and its lifeline to the
region," said Paul Trementozzi, AIA, principal in charge
of the $1.8 million project for OZ Architecture. "The
City of Lakewood requested a contemporary interpretation of
Art Deco. This bridges the early 1900's buildings and 1940's
to 1960's buildings that Lakewood is preserving on the site."
The 9,090-sq-ft visitor center, built by DSP Builders Inc.
of Commerce City, is located at Belmar Park, a city park at
the former estate of Denver Post heiress May Bonfils Stanton
Berryman. Belmar Park includes the Lakewood Heritage Center,
where more than 10 historic buildings - such as the White
Way Diner and Gil & Ethel's drugstore/beauty parlor -
have been moved or preserved in place. These examples of historic
commercial architecture are located on the pedestrian way
- designed by Shapins Associates of Boulder - leading to the
new visitor center.
The Lakewood Visitor Center contains two exhibit galleries,
a shop, ticket office, volunteer office, multipurpose function
room available for public rental, classroom, catering kitchen
and public restrooms.
Paul Derda Rec Center Opens in Broomfield
The City and County of Broomfield opened its new $17.6 million
Paul Derda Community Recreation Center on Nov. 1. Located
at 13201 Lowell Ave. in the 338-acre Broomfield County Commons,
the 85,000-sq-ft complex was designed by Denver-based Barker
Rinker Seacat Architecture and built by Saunders Construction
of Centennial.
The building was named after former longtime director of Broomfield
Parks and Recreation, Paul Derda. Known as the "director
of fun" for his untiring promotion of Broomfield Days
and other community events, Derda retired in 2001 after serving
as director for 21 years.
One of the recreation center's most unique water features
is a "river water slide" that flows within the 12,000-sq-ft
natatorium to channel and conserve water.
Other features of the Paul Derda Community Recreation Center
include an indoor playground and a computer-controlled outdoor
water spray area that uses recycled water. There is a gymnastics
center, walking/jogging track, rock climbing wall, two aerobic
dance studios, babysitting and tot-activity rooms, party and
meeting rooms, an outdoor sundeck, cardiovascular fitness
and strength training areas and family locker rooms.

Edward Kraemer & Sons Expands
into Nevada Market
Edward Kraemer & Sons recently broke ground on its
first project in Reno. In the $79.5 million project, Kraemer
will construct four bridges, including a record-setting
span over Galena Creek.
According to Nevada Department of Transportation officials,
the Galena Creek project is the largest single road-building
contract to be awarded in northern Nevada.
Kraemer's contract is part of a $250 million freeway construction
package that will link Reno to Carson City, alleviating
heavy traffic in the area.
When complete, the 1,719-ft-long Galena Bridge, costing
nearly $40 million and rising 300 ft above the creek, will
be the longest concrete cathedral arch bridge in the nation.
A documentary is already in the works to record the signature
project.
Earlier this year, Kraemer stepped into the Nevada market
for the first time with work on the Nevada approaches for
the Hoover Dam Bypass project. The company is also gearing
up for work on a project in Rochester, N.Y., and its for
first international project, a railroad bridge spanning
from northern Minnesota into Ontario.
Aside from stepping into new markets, the company is also
expanding its scope of work. Recently, Kraemer has been
involved with a foundation package for the new St. Louis
Cardinals' stadium and completed facility upgrades for a
concrete plant outside of Lincoln, Neb.
Kraemer is also pursuing other projects for parking facilities,
concrete plants and power companies.

Drahota's Wild Sage Co-Housing
Featured in National Solar Tour
The National Solar Tour, organized by the American Solar
Energy Society based in Boulder, took place nationwide last
fall in more than 480 communities with over 1,200 buildings
and an estimated 30,000 participants.
The buildings featured on the tour utilize clean, efficient
energy resources and are environmentally protective; strategies
like solar panels, solar water-heaters, wind turbines and
super-insulation are also used.
Drahota's Wild Sage Co-housing project is being built under
the direction of owner Wonderland Hill Development Co, notorious
for high energy-efficient/ E-Star ratings.
DDC is utilizing super-insulation support for solar water-heaters
and support for solar panels on Wild Sage's 11 buildings
housing 34 units. These units are also using formaldehyde-free
lumber and insulation, ACQ-treated lumber and low-VOC carpet
and paint.
The Wild Sage Co-housing project is also a participant in
the City of Boulder's Green Points Program, implementing
the use of recycled materials and onsite recycling.
Habitat for Humanity is working in conjunction with Drahota
on the construction; four units in this Wild Sage Co-housing
project are being constructed by Habitat for Humanity with
support from various subcontractors.
