New Residential Publication Launch/EPA
Building/CSU Green Building Program
McGraw-Hill's new bi-monthly residential magazine, My House
in the Mountain States, will present real-world stories about
the area's most successful and intelligent homebuilding and
renovation projects.
McGraw-Hill's 'My House' to Debut This
Month
Later this month, McGraw-Hill Construction will launch its
first residential magazine as part of new national network
of regional publications and information resources for high-end
homeowners, designers and building professionals.
My House - the company's first large-scale residential media
business - establishes a new resource in the "shelter"
and "builder" categories.
The first title in the network - My House in the Mountain
States - will debut in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and
Montana at the end of this month. Additional My House editions
will follow in other regions during the next three years.
The editor of My House in the Mountain States is Mindy Pantiel,
former Colorado editor of Metropolitan Home and Better Homes
and Gardens magazines.
Each bi-monthly issue of My House will present real-world
stories about the area's most successful and intelligent homebuilding
and renovation projects. Among the highlights:
- Editorial departments that cover regional building, design
challenges and solutions.
- Centerpiece features and photo essays focusing on the
area's most exciting homes.
- Sections that offer specific local contacts for materials,
services, furnishings and fixtures featured in the magazine.
Expanded service will be available online at www.myhousemag.com,
including access to McGraw-Hill Construction's broad scope
of resources.
FCI Named CM/GC for Bond Projects in
Yuma
FCI Constructors' Longmont office has begun work as the construction
manager/general contractor on the $7.9 million school district
bond projects for Yuma District 1.
The first project - Yuma High School - was completed last
summer and consisted of several upgrades and renovations to
the existing building, including replacement of the roof top
units, mechanical, electrical, theatrical and roofing. A new
Little Indians Preschool building was also built.
Morris Elementary School, a new 49,000-sq-ft building adjacent
to the existing middle school, is set for completion next
fall. The middle school will also undergo some modifications
as part of the bond package.
FCI and the architect - Bennett Wagner and Grody Architects
of Denver - along with the Yuma School District and its representative,
RLH Engineering, have been working through the design phases
since January to ensure the project stays within budget and
on time.

Haselden Partners with Pickens Tech
Haselden Construction of Centennial has partnered with the
T.H. Pickens Technical Center, an Aurora Public Schools vocational
school, to provide scholarships for building trade students.
Haselden's scholarships cover tuition, fees and supplies
and include an employment agreement upon graduation. Two students
were selected for the fall.
Haselden has also completed the new 40,000-sq-ft Choice School
at the Pickens Tech Campus and recently started phased renovations
to Buildings A and B, totaling 88,000 sq ft.
While working on these projects, Haselden employees taught
classes to building trade students - an approach that allows
students to work side by side with field staff and obtain
real-world experience.
Opus Northwest Lands New EPA Building
in LoDo
The Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. General Services Administration
recently awarded Opus Northwest LLC a contract to build the
new Region 8 headquarters for the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency.
The $70 million project - which includes the demolition of
the existing U.S. Postal Terminal Annex at 16th and Wynkoop
streets - will soon be under way, with new construction starting
in the spring. Occupancy is expected in summer 2006.
The nine-story, build-to-suit facility will be 25,000-plus
sq ft and house more than 900 employees. It will be located
just west of Union Station - the site was chosen for its easy
access to public transportation, which fulfills an EPA requirement.
Opus Northwest is working with architectural firm ZFG of
Portland, Ore. on the building, which will be designed and
built according to LEED silver certification standards.
CSU Denver's Green Building Program
Graduates Its First Class
Since graduating in June, nearly two-thirds of the students
in Colorado State University's new Green Building Certificate
Program have passed the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED
exam - and that has university officials declaring success.
The Green Building Certificate is offered by the university's
Department of Construction Management and was developed in
response to a growing need for specially trained professionals
able to respond to a changing industry and culture.
The 12-week program is designed for working design professionals
interested in advancing their careers in the green building
industries.
Guest instructors include some of the leading green building
professionals in the region. Among them: Dave Nelson, daylighting
expert; Alison Mason, solar engineer; Bruce Hendee, landscape
architect; Lauren Yarmuth of ENSAR; and professionals with
AEC, Boulder Associates, BuiltGreen and IBE.

Denver Area Firms Aid Bear River Bird
Refuge
Construction began in late summer on a $7.1 million administrative-education
center for the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in Brigham
City, Utah - one of the most significant birding areas in
the United States.
Lakewood-based Sellards & Grigg Inc. is among the team
of industry leaders contributing to the project. Others include
The RMH Group, Denver; GEI Consultants, Centennial; LONCO
Inc., Denver; Wenk Associates, Denver; Christopher Chadbourne
& Associates, Boston; and Parametrix Inc., Denver.
The firms have prepared construction documents and worked
with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to design an attractive,
multi-faceted building. HHI Contractors of Farmington, Utah
is the general contractor.
Powers Products Co. Unites Two Divisions
in One Facility
Two divisions of Powers Products Co. have united under one
roof and one brand after five years of operating from separate
locations and under different names.

Office

Robinson Brick Co. Expands Stone Choices
Denver-based Robinson Brick Co. has added four new colors
to its natural stone product line, Robinson Rock Thinrock.
Robinson Rock is the company's line of thin-cut natural stone
veneer, which is quarried and then processed into flat and
corner pieces at the company's manufacturing plant.
Using Thinveneer minimizes the installation costs associated
with using natural stone to cover walls. The average thickness
of Robinson Rock is between three-quarters of an inch to one-and-one-quarter
inches, weighing less than 15 lbs. per sq ft.
Robinson Rock is available in 30-plus colors, textures and
shapes, including the four new colors - Coalcreek, Westcliffe,
Goldrush and Wintersky.
CH2M Hill Lands $167M Air National Guard
Program
The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority has chosen Denver-based
CH2M Hill to provide program management and select design
services for construction of a new base at the 164th Airlift
Wing of the Tennessee Air National Guard at the Memphis Airport.
The wing is being relocated and expanded to accommodate C-5
aircraft, the largest in the Air Force. The $167 million construction
program is the largest ever undertaken by the Air National
Guard.
The CH2M Hill project team includes two Memphis-based partners
- The Crump Firm and Ellers, Oakley, Chester & Rike -
as well as DMJM Design. Services that will be provided include
program management, design management and construction management,
as well as site development design.
Construction will begin in 2005 and be complete by September
2008.
Stantec Supports Boys & Girls Clubs
Stantec's Denver and Fort Collins offices raised more than
$4,300 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro-Denver at the
company's 14th Annual Golf Outing.
The event was held in late summer at Saddle Rock Golf Club
in Aurora - a Stantec-designed project. More than 130 clients,
colleagues and friends attended.
