CU-Boulder's Vice Chancellor Will Retire This Fall/Klipp Names New Principals/RNL Announces Several New Hires
Paul Tabolt, vice chancellor for administration at the University of Colorado at Boulder, announced that he will retire on Oct. 31. During his career at CU, Tabolt played a role in every major building project since arriving on campus in 1991.
He joined the campus as director of facilities management and was named vice chancellor for administration in 1997. His division employs about 650 people and manages 9.2 million sq ft of building space on more than 1,000 acres.
Tabolt helped with several campus environmental improvements, including two recently completed buildings, ATLAS and the Wolf Law buildings, which received LEED certification for green building design.
Tabolt will continue working while CU conducts a national search for his replacement.
Denver’s Humphries Poli Architects PC has named two new associates.
Project
manager Adam Ambro joined the firm in 2001 as an intern and was part of the Brownstones at Riverfront Park project team. Ambro was also the project manager and lead designer for the recently opened Skyline Park Pavilion. Eric Blase joined the firm in January 2005 and has designed several recent projects for the Denver Housing Authority. Among his notable commissions is the 124-unit Benedict Park Place project, completed earlier this year.
Klipp has named two new principals.
Sam Miller has been with klipp since 1999 and served as the senior project architect for many of the firm’s educational facilities, including Denver School of the Arts and Denver School of Science and Technology. His current projects include Bluff Lake K-8 in Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood and preliminary work for the renovation of North High School for Denver Public Schools.
Keat C. Tan, who is also klipp’s director of design, has more than 20 years of national and international design experience. Before joining klipp in 2001, Tan worked for Michael Graves & Associates, The Hillier Group and Hsin Yieh Architects in Hong Kong.
Tan’s work for klipp includes being the design lead for the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center, Denver School of Science and Technology, and currently, the Denver Justice Center Courthouse.

Tim McCoy was promoted to vice president at ISEC Inc. In his 20 years with ISEC, McCoy has held positions with operations and sales. Most recently, as the regional manager of ISEC’s southwest region, he supervised operations in Arizona and Nevada.
McCoy continues to oversee the southwest region and has taken on additional corporate responsibilities
Matt Popowski joins Denver’s Fentress Bradburn Architects as its new public relations coordinator. Popowski, an Iowa native, recently relocated to Denver to work for FBA, where he handles all of the firm’s interactions with the media He holds a bachelor’s degree in writing from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
Leigh Seeger is the new economic development specialist for the Jefferson Economic Council. She is responsible for research and data collection, enterprise zone administration and helping with marketing projects.
Before coming to JEC, Seeger strengthened her marketing skills at Fieldwork Denver, assisting in market research. She has experience in business development and creating economic reports.
Leigh graduated from Colorado State University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Denver’s MOA has added two new professionals.
Christine Teichert, intern architect, holds a bachelor’s degree in architectural studies from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She has two years of experience in commercial, academic and senior housing design and is currently working on the Spectrum Retirement Community projects.
Nathan Martin, intern architect, holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Iowa State University. He has two years of experience in academic design and is currently working on the Southern Hills Middle School addition and remodel for Boulder Valley Public Schools and a new office-building project.
RNL hired several new employees in its Denver office
Nick Johnson joined RNL as a full-time design draftsman and CAD operator. Johnson received his associate’s degree in design drafting from Red Rocks Community College and has done architecture coursework at the University of Colorado. He previously worked with Martin/Martin Consulting Engineers and Flatirons Surveying & Engineering.
Xinkuang Liao was hired as an urban designer. Liao received her master’s degree in urban design from the University of Michigan and her bachelor’s degree in architecture from Tsinghua University. She previously worked with Smith Group in Chicago and A.D. Urban Ecology Institute of Tsinghua University.
Sarah McGarry works as an interior designer. McGarry comes to the firm from Hixson Architecture in Cincinnati. She received her bachelor’s degree in interior design from Miami University.
Bill Renz, Jr. joined as a project coordinator with the architecture studio. Renz comes to RNL from Austin AECOM. He received his master’s degree in architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology and his bachelor’s degree in construction technology from Murray State University. Renz is currently working on One Steamboat Place.
Michelle Richter has joined RNL as an interior designer. Richter previously worked with Scheels Home and Hardware in Fargo, Denise Drake Interior Design in Fargo, and Perlman Architects of Arizona in Scottsdale. She received her bachelor’s degree in interior design from North Dakota State University.
Kenneth Roberts has joined CH2M Hill as a construction manager in its Mexico City office.
Roberts has more than 25 years of experience managing large construction and engineering projects, particularly in the automotive industry.
In his new role, Roberts is part of the management team for the construction of Freightliner’s new heavy-duty truck assembly plant in northern Mexico.
John Bennett, University of Colorado at Boulder's associate dean of engineering for education, has been named the new director for the campus Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society, or ATLAS.
CU-Boulder established the ATLAS Institute in 1997 to integrate information and communications technology with a wide variety of disciplines ranging from music, theater and dance to film studies and journalism.
Bennett holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Rice University in electrical and computer engineering and a doctorate in computer science from the University of Washington.
David E. Ditchman joined Forest City Stapleton Inc. as director of leasing and business development.
Ditchman comes to Forest City from The CAC Group in San Francisco, a full-service commercial real estate brokerage firm, where he was a vice president.
In his new position, Ditchman works on land sales, leasing and new business development for Stapleton as well as Forest City's 170-acre Colorado Science and Technology Park at Fitzsimons. Ditchman has a bachelor’s degree in business from Miami University.
Terry Barnhill has joined Taylor Kohrs LLC as an assistant superintendent.
Barnhill has more than 28 years of commercial and industrial construction experience, most recently as a superintendent with All Phase Concrete Construction. He is OSHA trained and certified and holds various equipment certifications. He is a graduate of the University of Washington.
Tim Sommers joined Howell Construction as director of finance and administration. Sommers brings 20 years of experience in finance, accounting and administration to his new position.
Jenny McCoy joined Design Workshop’s Denver office as a landscape architect. McCoy earned her bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture with a specialization in environmental studies from Michigan State University.
She is experienced in regional and site master planning, park and recreation planning, and detailed site design, and specializes in 2D- and 3D-graphic simulation technology. She most recently worked as a senior landscape architect at Civil Resources in Frederick, Colo.
Meredith Schildwachter also joins Design Workshop’s Denver office as a landscape architect. Schildwachter earned a bachelor’s degree in horticulture with a concentration landscape design and contracting at Colorado State University and a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Colorado at Denver.
Jennifer Finch, division director of transportation development for the Colorado Department of Transportation, was awarded the Dr. L.I. Hewes Award for 2007. It was presented to her earlier this summer at the annual meeting of the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
Finch has worked on several large projects, including Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon and T-REX. She also launched the department’s Shortgrass Prairie Initiative, recognized nationally as a model for environmental preservation.
S.A. Miro Inc. has announced promotions in its structural engineering department.
Ben Roberts has been promoted to associate. Roberts’ recent projects include the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center and the Denver Justice Center Courthouse with klipp.
John Kendall was promoted to senior project engineer. Kendell led the firm’s engineering and BIM modeling of the New Computer Science/IS Tec Building at Colorado State University with Anderson Mason Dale Architects.
Jessica Marshall was also promoted to senior project engineer. Marshall recently completed work on the Commerce City Town Hall with RNL Design. She is based in Miro’s Summit County office.
Jason O’Mara, PE, was promoted to project engineer. O’Mara is working on the Ritz Residences at Highlands Resort at Lake Tahoe with OZ Architecture.
Brent Hartman has joined Denver’s Van Gilder.
The appointment of Hartman as a wellness consultant launches Van Gilder’s wellness program, designed to help industry partners create, execute and assess their own comprehensive wellness programs.
Hartman has been actively involved in wellness work throughout his career, earning a Certified Health Education Specialist designation and a master’s degree in public health from the University of South Florida.
Kurtis W. Williams has been named a principal at Westrian, the parent company of JR Engineering. Williams joined JR Engineering's Denver offices in 1995. His current position is client manager within the land development division.
A graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines, Williams oversees the land development division, major client management and quality control for diverse residential, commercial and municipal projects. A few of his current projects include the Sorrel Ranch development in Aurora, the Promontory Estates development in Broomfield, the Willow Bend development in Thornton and Heritage Hills in Lone Tree
Andrew J. Heitmann has been promoted to project executive and regional purchasing manager for the Kansas City and Denver offices of Turner Construction Co.
Heitmann joined Turner’s St. Louis office in 1991 as an intern in the estimating department. In 1996 Heitmann transferred to Turner's Kansas City office as an engineer and superintendent on the Boehringer Ingelheim Production Facility project. After several promotions, he became manager of business development for Kansas City.
Heitmann holds a bachelor’s degree in construction science and management from Kansas State University.
Denver’s JE Dunn Construction has named several new team members.
Mary Kay Monville joins JE Dunn as legal counsel. She bring more than 15 years of experience and will be responsible for overseeing all legal matters for the company. Monville’s broad range of expertise includes construction industry contracts, insurance and surety law and risk analysis and management.
Josh Daniel joins JE Dunn as a project manager. His project management experience includes the $12-million renovation of a 350-unit apartment complex in Austin, Texas, and a $10-million condominium conversion of a 125-unit apartment complex in Portland, Ore. For JE Dunn, Daniel is currently working on the Spire project, a 41-story, $119-million high-rise residential condominium project in downtown Denver.
Shawn Burke, safety specialist, has nine years of industry experience and has spent the past five focused on the implementation and management of construction safety. Serving as a field safety consultant, he was responsible for performing onsite safety evaluations, working with general contractors to develop and implement site-specific safety plans and conducting training courses.
Jake McClain, estimator, has provided estimating services for a wide range of commercial projects. He is a member of the American Society of Professional Estimators and the American Institute of Constructors.
Sam Randel, superintendent trainee, has served as a field engineer on a $42-million senior campus and provided estimating support for projects ranging from $500,000 to $20 million.
Randel is currently serving on the Residences at Belmar Plaza, a $25-million, 185,023-sq-ft residential project with ground-level retail.
Jason Woolard, assistant project manager, brings more than seven years of experience to JE Dunn, most recently serving as a civil engineering officer in the U.S. Air Force. His duties there included project team supervision as well as managing plans, priorities, schedules, budgets and resources.
Woolard is currently serving on the Spire project, a 41-story, $119-million high-rise residential condominium project in downtown Denver.
Michael Zacher, assistant superintendent, has 10 years of experience in the construction industry. He has served with several major local contractors on projects, including the Colorado Convention Center Expansion and the Hyatt Regency at the Colorado Convention Center Hotel.
Zacher is currently working on the Peloton project, a $93-million, 390-unit condominium in Boulder.
Tryba Architects has announced new additions to the Denver design firm.
Roxanne Torrez joins the firm as an administrator. She has management and administrative services experience, most recently with Urban Outfitters. Torrez is skilled at scheduling, employee management, budgeting and sales. She attended the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.
Sarah Showalter joins the firm as an intern. She is recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Design with a master’s degree in city planning and a certification in urban design. Her work experience includes positions with The Reinvestment Fund in Philadelphia and Norris Design in Denver.
Emmy Blair also joins the firm as an intern. Her experience includes architectural, environmental design, building science and site planning and design coursework. She also has experience in three-dimensional rendering and animation work.
