CU-Boulder Hires New Campus Architect and Health and Safety Director/ Western Colorado NAWIC Elects New Officers/OZ Adds Seven Staff Members
The University of Colorado at Boulder hired Paul Leef as director of planning, design and construction and campus architect in November.
Paul Leef, who has had more than 20 years of building and renovation experience in higher education, has been named director of planning, design and construction and the campus architect at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Leef will oversee the next phase of improvements on the 9.3 million sq ft of campus buildings and all new construction. Leef is responsible for the conceptual planning, design, engineering and construction of all capital and noncapital projects for the campus, including the development of a five-year, $650-million capital improvement effort to support the university’s “Flagship 2030” strategic plan.
CU also has appointed Derrick K. Watson, a campus veteran with more than 20 years of administrative experience, as its new director of environmental health and safety.
Watson’s appointment became permanent on Oct. 15 after he had served in the position on an interim basis starting Aug. 1. He reports to Paul Tabolt, vice chancellor for administration, for whom he has been an assistant since 2001.
In his new position, Watson is responsible for a department that provides consulting and compliance services to the campus in areas such as radiation safety, hazardous materials and waste disposal, industrial hygiene, asbestos and lead management, emergency planning and environmental regulatory compliance. He also acts as a liaison between the campus and local, state and federal regulatory agencies.
BSB Design founder Jack Bloodgood was officially inducted into the third annual William S. Marvin Hall of Fame for Design Excellence in Washington, D.C. last fall.
The honor was presented during the Builders’ Choice Awards dinner. Bloodgood started BSB Design, formerly Bloodgood Sharp Buster Architects and Planners Inc., in 1966 in Des Moines, and since then, the firm has expanded to 15 locations nationwide, including offices in Denver.
The Western Colorado Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction recently elected its 2007-08 officers and directors for a one-year term: Tara Cerny, United Frame Works, president; Kathy Duran, Camelot Gardens, vice president; Kathy Chiono, Eagle Construction, secretary; Mitzi Kenyon, Overhead Door Co. of Colorado, treasurer; Wanda Graham, Bighorn Consulting Engineers, corresponding secretary.
The directors are: Annette Kaspar, Sterling Crane; Mary Coombs; Rebecca Dowd, Ben Dowd Excavating.
NAWIC Western Colorado Chapter also welcomes two new members: Elaine Harris, Vectra Bank and Brigitte Vandeleur, Elam Construction Inc.
Anne M. Pagano of Drexel, Barrell & Co. of Steamboat Springs was recently certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional.
Pagano is the regional manager for the Steamboat Springs office and currently serves as lead civil engineer for the city of Steamboat Springs’ Base Area redevelopment.
Adolfson & Peterson Construction of Aurora recently announced several new appointments: Clark Bender, preconstruction manager; Eric Dimmick, senior estimator; Gerald Reining, senior estimator; Edwin Fowler, project engineer and Shawn Bushong, project engineer.
OZ Architecture recently announced the addition of seven new staff members: Emily Hogle, interior designer; Jennifer O’Brien, interior designer; Rebeca Aristizabal, interior designer; Noel Saturay, architectural illustrator; James Creviston, workstation administrator; Tamara Bujakowski, business development manager and Angela Welsh, human resources manager.
Gary Tanksley recently joined The RMH Group of Denver as a mechanical engineer. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Mississippi State University and recently finished a design for the renovation of the Wayne Aspinall Federal Building in Grand Junction.
Powers Products Co. recently announced the addition of three new employees and one promotion. Tim Eunice has accepted a position as vice president of Powers Products Co.’s Denver commercial door, frame, and hardware division. Dave Steele has been promoted to product manager of Powers’ Operable Partition division. Jim Jones has joined Powers as assistant project manager in its Architectural Wall Panel division. Tom Brown has joined Powers as project manager in its Division 10 Specialties Division.
Tom Fochtman, co-owner of Denver-based CoCal Landscape, earned the 2007 Lawn and Landscape Leadership award at the 9th annual Leadership Awards banquet held in conjunction with the Green Industry Conference and Equipment Expo.
The award is given annually to six landscape contracting companies that exemplify leadership qualities, environmental strategies and those that give back to the industry. Fochtman was among the leaders nominated by contractors, suppliers and others associated with the green industry. He and the other winners were selected by the staff of Lawn and Landscape magazine.
Ilana Harris recently joined Bornengineering in Westminster as director of marketing and business development. Harris will promote the firm’s structural and civil engineering expertise as well as its building envelope and evaluation services.

Trevor Cavanaugh recently joined Colorado-based Power Motive Corp. as sales manager for major accounts. In his new position, Cavanaugh is responsible for handling all sales and service concerns for the Komatsu distributor’s key accounts and for any national accounts located in the state.

His primary responsibilities include the management and execution of the development and construction of Alberta’s retail and mixed-use developments.
