Names In The News - January 2004

Tom Roche, president and CEO of Roche Constructors Inc., was recently awarded the 2003 Bravo! Entrepreneur Award for Greeley.

Under Roche's guidance, Roche Constructors, a Greeley-based general contracting firm, has grown to $130 million in annual revenues. He also serves on several committees and boards throughout the Front Range.

The Bravo! Entrepreneur program is sponsored by several northern Colorado chambers of commerce, with winners chosen from Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland and their outlying communities. Nominees can come from any regional industry and must display the core values of entrepreneurship - risk-taking, overcoming adversity and achieving business success.

Joseph D. Skaggs has been named chairman of ASM International's Rocky Mountain chapter.

Skaggs is a senior metallurgical and materials engineer with Schaefer Engineering Corp., specializing in material failure analysis involving overloading, fractures, fatigue, corrosion, water intrusion and related failure mechanisms.

Established in 1913, ASM International is one of the oldest materials societies in the United States and serves materials engineers and scientists in advancing technology and application of materials and metals.

Kristin Moltzan and Jason Mann have joined the Denver office of Bucher Willis & Ratliff Corp. as project engineer interns.

Moltzan's project experience includes site development for six Littleton Public Schools sites, the Auraria Higher Education Center stormwater master plan and improvements to Belleview Avenue for the City of Greenwood Village.

Mann recently moved to Denver from Maryland, where he was a job engineer on a $218 million metro extension project. Mann has contributed to projects for BWR that include an Auraria Higher Education Center parking garage traffic study, the Signal Ditch Trail Connector project for the City of Thornton and Windsor Schools site improvements as a subconsultant to Bennett, Wagner & Grody Architects.

Grant Taylor has joined Taylor Kohrs as director of sales. He will be responsible for marketing, sales and business development. Before joining Taylor Kohrs, Taylor held a variety of positions as a partner at Woodcraft Architectural Millwork in Lenexa, Kan., where he was responsible for overall company performance and revenue generation.

Kurt D. Mahnken, PE, has been promoted to senior vice president of CLC Associates, a 115-person engineering, architectural, landscape architectural, planning and surveying firm.

Mahnken has been with the firm since its formation in 1984 and has been active in the firm's growth from a four-person firm to its present size. In his new role, Mahnken will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Denver office operations, in addition to continuing his role as director of engineering. Before coming to CLC Associates, Mahnken worked for two local water resource engineering firms and the Bureau of Reclamation.

Meurer & Associates has added three new engineers to the firm.

Seth Turner is currently registered as an engineer-in-training. He recently finished his master of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Turner relocated to the Denver area from Illinois, where he completed his bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Kari A. Mueller is registered as an engineer-in-training and received her bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Washington at Seattle. While in Seattle, Mueller worked as a civil engineering intern for the firm of DMJM+Harris. She previously worked as a construction engineer with Hensel Phelps before joining the firm.

Andrea Culp holds dual degrees in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Platteville. She is registered as an engineer-in-training.

Alliance Construction Solutions, a construction management/general contracting firm, has announced the addition of several new staff members in its corporate headquarters in Loveland.

Tom Marko has joined the firm as a project manager. Marko has more than 18 years of experience in health care, residential, retail, office buildings and institutional. His projects include the recent completion of the $260 million restoration and additions to Union Station in Kansas City and the $52 million Rush Copley hospital in Aurora, Ill.

Joe Lillion has joined as a project manager. Lillion has more than 28 years of experience in the construction industry, including the recent completion of the $55 million Denver Women's Correctional Facility and the $83 million Beaver Creek Resort.

Scott Cadwallader has joined as an estimator. Cadwallader brings Alliance Construction "bid it and win it" experience. Some of his most notable wins include the $7 million Pricewaterhouse Cooper seven-story tenant finish in Houston and the $5 million Storage Tek renovation in Louisville.

Scott Brelsford has joined as a project manager. Brelsford has more than 16 years of experience with large government and private projects. His career has taken him from Colorado to the West Coast to the East Coast and back to Colorado.

Chris Strom has joined Maxwell Construction as director of marketing. Strom has several years of business development experience with other construction companies in the Denver area. Strom will focus on expanding Maxwell's experience on multifamily, senior housing, retail and school work along the Front Range.

Mike Graeve has been hired by Bosco Constructors Inc. as vice president of operations. Graeve will focus his efforts directing the day-to-day operations and implementing plans and policies. He is also the project manager for the Meadows Water Treatment Plant expansion in Castle Rock. He has more than 20 years of experience in heavy civil and mechanical projects with a general contractor, engineer/construct contractor and a mechanical subcontractor.

Paul Marlow of BCER Engineering has been certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED-accredited professional. Marlow has been at BCER Engineering Inc. for five years as a mechanical engineer. He is the project manager for the renovations taking place at the Minoru Yasui Plaza in downtown Denver.

John Frazier, PE, has joined Farnsworth Group Inc. in its Denver office. Frazier is a civil engineer with seven years of experience in grading, utility design, erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, best management practice design and field observation. He will be a project engineer in the water/wastewater section in the Denver office.

Nicole Horst has been promoted by Wenk Associates Inc. to the position of project landscape architect. Horst joined Wenk Associates in January 2000 and has provided site analysis, planning and construction documentation on some of firm's most notable projects, including the 215-acre Aurora Sports Park, the Great Lawn Park at the Lowry Redevelopment and the Menomonee River Valley Redevelopment in Milwaukee.

Humphries Poli Architects recently added two new staff members to the firm.

David Solomon, AIA, began his architectural career in Denver and later relocated to Europe, where he served in leadership roles on many significant large-scale projects in Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom. Returning to Denver in 2000, he served as the design manager for the Wellington Webb Municipal Office Building. Solomon is a licensed architect in Colorado and will serve as one of HPA's project managers.

Originally from Denver, Ben Griswold returned after completing his master's degree in architecture from Yale University. Before beginning his architecture studies, he was an instructor in ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Lill Street Arts Center in Chicago. Griswold is HPA's newest designer.

Quality Electric has announced the addition of two new staff members.

Dave Sodia, PE, an electrical engineer, has joined the company's preconstruction services group. Sodia has more than 10 years of experience in the electrical contracting industry. He is also an experienced designer and estimator, a licensed Colorado master electrician and a registered professional engineer in Colorado.

Rick Russell has joined the company as its service department manager. Russell has been in the electrical industry for more than 32 years, including 12 years as an electrical contractor, 10 years of service field experience and 10 years as a service manager/estimator. He attended Red Rocks Community College and is certified in integrated voice, data and video systems in residential and commercial structures and holds a Colorado journeyman's license. He is also a non-commissioned officer of the U.S. Air Force.

Swinerton Builders has announced the addition of five new employees to its Denver operations.

Richard Snyder has been assigned as assistant project manager to the Douglas County Justice Center expansion. He is a graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor of science degree in building construction. He previously worked on high-end multifamily and resort projects in the mountains.

Ryan Haas joins Swinerton's interiors group as an estimator. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University, responsible for providing estimating assistance for tenant improvement opportunities.

Jessica Roybal works at the Douglas County Justice Center expansion as project field administrator.

Dawn Tyree is the project administrator at Belmar Blocks 3 and 4 retail project for Continuum Partners in Lakewood.

Ben Wullschlager also joins Swinerton's team at Belmar as an intern project engineer. Wullschlager is a graduate of Bucknell University and is pursuing his master's degree in construction management.

Range/SEH has announced the addition of several new employees to its Denver office.
A.P. (Skip) Hlad, PE, joins the firm in a business development role. He has more than 28 years of experience with CDOT and during his tenure, managed a team responsible for $250 million in projects on major interstate highways in the Denver metropolitan area.

Paul Encinias, PE, is a senior professional engineer with 15 years of experience in bridge and building structural design. He brings to the firm high-level skills in preliminary and final design, plan preparation and review, specifications, fee and construction cost estimates, field construction observation and construction administration.

Jeff Diehl, EI, recently graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is based in the Denver office and will focus on structural engineering and bridge design.

Heidi McBride joins the firm as the regional communications coordinator for the western region. She has a degree in journalism and technical communications from Colorado State University and five years of professional experience.

Laurie Pennington comes from the University of Colorado, where she served as a professional research assistant. She will help the firm with data entry and administration and has more than 20 years of professional experience.

Jacob Horvath, EI, is a bridge inspection engineer and recently graduated from Northern Arizona University. He served as an engineering technician and an assistant site superintendent on previous projects.

Derek Johnson, PE, has joined Nolte Associates as a senior engineer in the firm's Denver office. His primary focus will be on engineering and project management for commercial, industrial, office and multifamily site development, as well as providing infrastructure design support for the residential land development group. Johnson has more than 13 years of experience on a multitude of public and private engineering projects throughout Colorado, including airports, hotels, hospitals, roadways and government facilities.
