Names In The News - April 2004

Two engineering professors at the University of Colorado at Boulder have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

Kaspar J. Willam, professor of civil engineering, was recognized for contributions to constitutive modeling and computational failure analysis of concrete and quasi-brittle materials and structures.

George H. Born, professor of aerospace engineering sciences, was recognized for contributions to satellite orbit determination and applications of satellites to geophysics and oceanography.

Rod C. Hoffman has been elected by the American Council of Engineering Companies to serve as national vice chair of the executive committee. Hoffman will begin a two-year term in May.

Hoffman, a registered professional engineer and senior vice president in charge of strategic planning for HDR, has been a member of ACEC since 1992. He has faculty status with the Advanced Management Institute, teaching ACEC's Senior Executive Institute for executive leadership development. He has served on ACEC's national membership, public relations and international committees.

Lucy Bowen has been named vice president at HDR's Denver office. With HDR since 2001, Bowen is a senior project manager with more than 28 years of experience in environmental sciences projects. She has managed environmental regulatory programs and prepared compliance documents and technical reports for industrial, commercial and public works projects across the United States. In addition, she has managed large multidisciplinary teams and integrated environmental compliance efforts with engineering, construction, legal and financial requirements.

Drexel, Barrell & Co. appointed Barbara N. Weiss, PE, to president for 2004. Weiss is one of four owners of Drexel, Barrell & Co. who annually rotates the roles of officers.

William K. Wright, PLS, has moved into the role of vice president. The remaining board of directors - Michael D. Middleton, PE, and Clifford R. Brockman, PE - will serve as secretary and treasurer, respectively.

Weiss celebrates her 30th anniversary at Drexel, Barrell & Co. this year, where she has developed a diverse civil engineering background specializing in land development.

Lilly D. Hardin, PE, AICP, and Neil Sampson, PLS, have also joined Drexel, Barrell & Co.

Hardin becomes the regional manager of the Colorado Springs office. A licensed professional engineer, Hardin has more than 20 years of experience. She has a strong background in federal projects and federal program management, having served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force for 15 years.

Sampson joined the Colorado Springs office as a survey manager. He has more than 20 years of experience in all aspects of land surveying with both conventional and GPS equipment. He is a registered professional land surveyor in Colorado and Utah.

Michael Lewis has joined Alliance Construction Solutions as a superintendent on its project management team. Lewis has more than 16 years of construction experience.
He is currently the superintendent on the new Pioneer Expeditionary Learning Charter School in Fort Collins.

MKK Consulting Engineers Inc. has made several recent additions to its staff.

Dan Grant, PE, is a senior electrical engineer and project manager in MKK's Englewood headquarters. Grant is the electrical team leader for MKK's health care group. His consulting engineering experience covers numerous health care and medical, industrial and manufacturing, government, educational, commercial and retail projects.

Daniel Hackett is a mechanical designer in MKK's Englewood headquarters. Hackett has engineering consulting experience in a variety of markets, including industrial, institutional, educational, commercial and tenant finish. His responsibilities include design drafting, field investigations/surveys, construction observation, design reviews, consulting and programming.

Peter Failla, EIT, is a mechanical engineer in MKK's Englewood headquarters. A recent graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, Failla will be involved in the entire mechanical design process including HVAC, plumbing and piping. The types of projects he will assist with include health care, commercial, tenant finish and education.

Adam Cron is an electrical designer in MKK's Englewood headquarters. Cron previously worked for MKK for two years doing design drafting and site surveys for telecommunications projects such as cell sites and switches.

Mike Wangsmo is an electrical designer in MKK's Billings, Mont. office. Wangsmo will be providing electrical design and drafting assistance to the Billings office for K-12 educational projects.

Ted Beers is celebrating his 25th year at Sinnett Builders Inc. as a project manager.
Beers's most noteworthy projects include the Foothills Mall in Fort Collins, Group Publishing in Loveland and the historic renovation of the Linden Hotel in downtown Fort Collins.

Mike Sullivan and Orville Hinerman with the Rocky Mountain business unit of The Weitz Co. have been accredited by the U.S. Green Building Council as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - LEED - professionals.

Before joining The Weitz Co. in 1998, Sullivan worked for Trujillo Steel Erectors and Hensel Phelps Construction Co. He is currently the senior project manager for the Fitzsimons Academic Office West.

Before joining Weitz, Hinerman was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was recently promoted to vice president of the Rocky Mountain business unit and has been with the company for 19 years.

The Weitz Co. has also hired Buster L. Arbaney as a project engineer and Jerry Pankey as a project superintendent.

Before joining Weitz, Arbaney worked for Western Summit Constructors and Todd Habermann Construction. He is currently working on the Midland Center project.

Before joining Weitz, Pankey worked as a field superintendent for Benson Design and Building and Structural Associates. He is currently working on the Timbers Phase E & F project in Snowmass Village.

James Pisula-Litoff, CFA, has joined The Neenan Co. as a vice president in its real estate finance group. His focus will be acquiring medical office and office properties in the mountain and southern regions, as well as structuring development opportunities.
Pisula-Litoff has extensive experience in real estate acquisitions, finance and asset management.

Stan Kobayashi, PE, recently joined LONCO Inc. as the manager of the transportation department. Kobayashi brings more than 27 years of Colorado transportation engineering experience specializing in bridge and structural engineering. He will manage transportation projects in both the public and private sectors and be responsible for promoting the firm's expertise in transportation engineering.

G.E. Johnson Construction has recently promoted five individuals.

Jeff Christmann has been promoted to vice president and is assuming responsibility for business development. Christmann joined the firm after graduating in 1991. Most recently, he has been serving as an operations manager overseeing business development and multiple projects in G.E. Johnson's health care division.

Dan Rondinelli will be combining his business development, estimating and operations experience as the manager of the newly created special projects division in Denver. He joined the firm in 2001 as the business development manager in G.E. Johnson's Denver office.

Odette Bent-Buckles has been promoted to corporate controller. She began working at G.E. Johnson in 1995.

Bill McCarthy has been promoted to construction manager. McCarthy joined G.E. Johnson in 1990 and is a seasoned project manager with experience in diverse project types and delivery methods.

Fred Wolfe has been promoted to construction manager. While maintaining responsibility for the firm's special projects division in Colorado Springs, Wolfe will assume additional operational oversight responsibility for various projects. He joined G.E. Johnson in 1996.

Kenneth Frantz was recently promoted to manager of engineering design for the E-470 Public Highway Authority. Frantz has worked as a design engineer at E-470 for the past five years.

In his new role, Frantz will oversee the design management for the recently approved north-south fly-over ramps at the I-70/E-470 interchange and develop plans for the continued widening of the south end of E-470, along with other road improvements.

M-E Engineers Inc. has announced the following promotions.

Mike Hart, PE, has been with M-E Engineers for 10 years and was promoted to principal in the Denver office. Hart is the mechanical project manager on the Newton Auditorium Expansion and recently completed the renovation of Lambeau Field for the Green Bay Packers.

Brian Kannady, PE, has been promoted to the associate level in the Denver office.
Kannady has managed several major projects since joining M-E Engineers and is currently managing the renovation of Spartan Stadium at Michigan State University.

The Norris Dullea Co, a Denver landscape architectural and planning firm promoted two members of its staff.

Stacey Weaks, ASLA, has been promoted to associate landscape architect. He is currently involved in two major community development projects in Colorado - the Banning Lewis Ranch Community in eastern Colorado Springs and the Serenity Ridge New Community development in southeast Aurora.

Katie Metzler has been promoted to associate graphic designer. She is responsible for the overall management and coordination of the firm's graphic design department.
In addition, she works with the planning and design teams to provide graphic design on firm's projects.

Michael Lewis has joined Alliance Construction Solutions as a superintendent on its project management team. He has more than 16 years of construction experience, including Keystone Mountain Resort Condominiums, Dakota Ridge High School and the $85 million construction of Coors Field.

Tom Fletcher has joined Quality Electric Inc. as a project manager. He has more than 34 years of electrical contracting experience. Fletcher holds a Colorado journeyman and Colorado master electrical licenses.

Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. has transferred Charles (Chuck) Childs, PE, to the Denver office.

Childs has 18 years of diverse experience offering a unique perspective and valuable insight in the many facets of civil engineering. His experience includes water supply and treatment, wastewater collection and pumping stations, storm water management, subdivision and land development, streets and roads, traffic studies and safety analysis, and technical and administrative operations of public works departments. Childs relocated to Denver from the SEH office in Lake County, Ind.

Monroe & Newell Engineers Inc. has added new staff members to its Denver office.

Briana L. Fitzgerald joined as a structural engineer. Fitzgerald has a master of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is currently working on the Water Tower Village in Arvada and Hummingbird Lodge in Bachelor Gulch.

Marc Schafer joined as a structural engineer. Schafer graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder and has been working in the A/E industry for two years. He is working on Flagstaff Mountain-Deer Trail in Deer Valley, Utah; the Lansdowne Dementia facility in St. Louis and St. Anthony's CT Scan in Denver.

The Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association and Colorado Rock Products Association have awarded Ed Foster, safety and human resources manager for Greeley-based Bestway Concrete, the 2003 Rodman C. Stewart Memorial Safety Leadership Award.

The award recognizes Foster's significant contribution to safety in the mixed concrete and rock products industries and the high safety standard he has brought to Bestway Concrete. Foster particularly distinguished himself in his work on a new safety training CD-ROM for miners, which received a best product award from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association.

Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar has appointed Steve Black as his deputy attorney general for natural resources and the environment. Black is a prominent Denver environmental and natural resources lawyer with the law firm of Holland and Hart LLP. Black assumes his new duties March 1.

Hogan & Hartson has named Tom Strickland, former U.S. Attorney for Colorado,as a managing partner of the Denver office. In this capacity, he will be responsible for the management and strategic direction of the firm's 100-person Denver office and also participate in overall management of the firm.
